Have you checked to see if the engine under tray is still there? It sounds as if something was lose hence the thumping then eventually fell off. I would be tempted to take it to a local garage not a main dealer and ask them to pop it up on the ramps to check underneath, probably do it for a few quid if nothing is wrong other than an engine undertray etc. 2014 Freelander 2 XS TD4

Hi, thanks for your reply...the under tray is still on, although not sure if anything that should be there still is. Are these difficult in removing and replacing in order to check , are they all in one piece ?

Hi I checked the springs and cannot see any breakages, my thoughts now are with a heat shield that may have worked loose and fallen through the engine compartment . |

Thankyou my friend ! ...just checked and Near side spring at the bottom has a jagged end to it so it looks like a few inches are missing.

..... don't want to add to your woe, good practice is to change both springs on the same axle.

Whilst that is good practice in most cases. Most experienced engineers will tell you that springs normally break through manufacturing defects or accidental damage causing stress points, rather than age related fatigue. I would just have the other spring examined and if there is no sign of damage leave it alone. But that is just my opinion and that of my experienced colleagues in the trade. |

I can see that but would be happier with a new pair. |
