Are both headlights playing up or just one? And are you saying you have got dipped beam but no main beam, or that the light is stuck on full beam?

Hi. If you have had a bulb failure and the glass has shattered check there is no fragments in the shutter mechanism

Im not familiar with that name but I presume they are the ones which use a single filament HB3 for both main and dipped using a shutter?

As both shutters have failed it must be something common to both units.

First I would check the wiring diagrams to see how the shutters are activated and then work back from the light housing connections.

Could it be the switch on the steering column that is faulty? Jules

Unfortunately the move to a single HB3 was not a great idea. The bulbs get too hot and burn out quicker than normal. I usually have to replace both my bulbs during the course of about 18 months.

If you go for brighter (and hotter bulbs ) then they just burn out quicker. I tried that, gave up and went back to cheapo bulbs and carry spares in the car.

JLR did recognise there was a design fault and for a while would add a resistor FOC to reduce the current to the bulbs and prolong their life, if a customer complained. That fix is not available any more. I dont know anyone who had the fix but to my mind reducing the current would also reduce the beam brightness which is not helpful as its not very bright anyway.
If Id known how bad the late model standard lights were Ive have bought a Metropolis, which had HID lights, instead of the SE Tech. But at the time the Metropolis seemed to offer only things I didnt really want/need.

You can convert to HID but its very expensive and you acan buy a lot of Nightbreakers for a £1000.

I also researched LED replacement, but basically the projector lens system works very poorly with aftermarket LEDs as it impossible to get the LEDs to emit from the focus point of the projector lens so the beam spread is just awful and often illegal. Jules

Ive just bought this kit:

Only delivered today after ordering in late November. Rolling Eyes Seems to be well made and of good quality. I'll get fitted at some stage over Christmas and report back my impressions. Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

Fitted the HID Kit.
More details in my Freelander 2 thread. I'll post updates there rather than duplicating on this thread.

Hi all received a set of 55w X hid (50% more light) kit but when opened there is no X on the packaging or the items X is only printed on my receipt.
When I phoned them they said there is no difference between 55w and 55wX only the bulbs are different.
They said that the bulbs are 5000 for 55w and 6500 for the X 50% more light
There are 2 different codes and prices one for the 55w and one for the 55wX
Has anyone else had any experience with these kits
Regards
Dave

No idea.
I got the 35w kit and delighted with the improvement over the hb3s. Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948
