K&N air filter

Evening all, just wondering if fitting a K&N air filter to my FL2 sd would be beneficial, help the engine breath a bit easier etc.

TIA

Simple answer is no IMO. You are wasting good money buying one.

In order to achieve the efficiencies required of modern the ICEs the designers have pretty much sorted the air flow for normal cars. Its mainly at high rpm that resistance to air flow is a problem. For diesels where rpm is very low compared to race engines any gains (if any) are unnoticeable.

In days past when I first came across K&N filters (1970s) - inlet manifolds were cast metal and crude. Then K&N could make a difference when part of an upgrade.

I dont believe they can now. Jules

When I bought my pre-owned 2008 LR2 in December last year, it came with one installed by the previous owner. I also have a LR paper filter that I bought for when I clean the K & N. Because the K & N is an oiled filter, it could foul the MAF so keep a can of MAF cleaner handy and oil the K & N carefully, both, very easy jobs BTW. My butt dyno observation Smile , is that throttle response is better. As for any other benefits, I don't think so.

What I notice with this LR2 or at least my LR2 ( I live rural so many roads are unpaved and are dusty) is that the darn air intake picks up a ton of dust compared to my previous ride. I still have to pull the wheel well liner and check the full air intake for any gaps.

Simple answer is you are wasting money . Save K and N filters for what they are designed for , giving more airflow to tuned engines . I’ve had them fitted as part of a tune up on bikes with DynoJet or Power Commander kits and decat exhausts . Cleaning, drying and oiling them is a bind compared with swapping a paper cartridge filter . You might find that you get a bit more induction noise but performance gain ? Nothing you could measure , we are talking about a 2.2 diesel not an Ariel Atom or KTM XBow so why even bother ? . 2009 GS Auto Zermatt Silver - Sold June 21 after 10 years of ownership

Reving to nearly 7000rpm this car made an extra 4BHP which shaved 0.2 sec off his 0-60. But whether the k&N was actually filtering as well (very dependant on careful oiling of the filter) is unknown in this test.

You'd probably get a similar % improvement in a FL2 by pumping up the tyres and emptying the boot. Smile Jules

From what I have read elsewhere, no.

My Land Rover LR029078 (petrol engine) filter $38.50 from recent outback trip. I didn't notice any improvement in engine performance with a new filter. Filter is doing its job & the engine works the same either with old or new filter as far as I can tell.

Thank heaven for sensible thinking, most forums would be “oh yeah gave me another 15HP and made the car feel like a Lambo”

For a fact a good paper element will filter far better than any aftermarket filter and basically that’s what you want, an air filter is for filtering the intake air not making the vehicle go faster. Regards

David

Lovely i6 has now gone, but not me......

Please let me know if anything in my post offends you, as I may wish to offend you again......
