Insulation engine cover - replacement

Hello everyone and Good Sunday.

I would like help to restore the sound insulation (also thermo ??) under the engine cover, that is the layer of sponge on a thin rubber support.

Does it exist as a replacement in LR?
Is it possible to restore it in another way?

Can someone post a photo of the under cover to see how it's done, since I found my insulation practically pulverized with some small residue on the surface of the engine? Probably the larger pieces were taken away by the mechanic at the various maintenance coupons that I did .

The car in question is obviously a Freelander 2 TD4 2010 with DPF.

Almost 2 months later, no sign of heat effecting it at all. Might even put a 2nd layer in as there's room. Noticable reduction in engine noise.

Plenty of fancy expensive stuff out there that'd probably be more effective... I only used the cheap Aliexpress stuff. https://www.aliexpress.com/item/3281959889...4c4dBQMeeJ

Plenty left to do the bonnet as well which is next job

Hi Grue,

what thickness did you use to isolate the cover? Do you know up to what temperature the material can resist?

I don't know what temperature the surface of the engine can reach.

that was 7mm thick... but will do another layer.

Seller says 107degC for maximum.... but took that with grain of salt and kept pretty close eye on it. Zero sign of breakdown, and still stuck to cover plate fine.

Do you want to add another 7mm layer by gluing it?

But is there enough space between the cover and the engine itself?

Pretty sure there's room for another layer, but won't know till i try Smile

the material has sticky backing. peel the paper off and stick it to whatever you want

I had logged into the Forum this evening to pose exactly the same question as john capri. I removed my engine cover today for the first time to fit my EGR blanking plate and the foam insulation is well past its prime. Is it available from LR? This photo of a cover on eBay would suggest that it’s a pretty snug fit between cover and engine.

I have searched on the web with the hope of finding an LR spare part but I didn't find anything, but then I thought that Grue did well that he built it and certainly saved some money Thumbs Up Thumbs Up .
The realization seems easy enough.

These folks - https://www.carinsulation.co.uk/index.aspx...=GlassMAT+ - do a range of foil backed and plain foam in a range of thicknesses. Perhaps worth a try?

On some English sites by serious dealers and known, the isolator engine cover costs about 54 Euros including taxes and excluding shipping.

Has anyone ever measured the temperatures on the top of the engine when it is hot with thermocouples or with a laser thermometer? It's necessary to avoid

For the do it yourself, you might think of using sheets made from butyl and aluminum, which have good acoustic insulation characteristics and good temperature resistance (max 150 ° - 200 °). it is necessary to prevent the insulation from burning.

I used an IR thermometer to measure the temperature of the top of the engine with the cover off after a ten mile run and it was in the range 60 to 80 degrees, depending on exactly where the thermometer was pointing. I have just used some of the 10mm UKLiner sold by Car Insulation (see my link above) which they say is good for 130 degrees to replace the disintegrating original foam. I’ll be doing a couple of longish runs next week and I’ll take the cover off after that and see how it performed.

I’ll obviously need to add some insulation in the channels on each side. I was using the original foam as a template and hadn’t realised those areas were missing!

Hi Simon

you did a good job.

I would like to ask you some clarifications:

After you have restored the insulation with a 10mm foam sheet , You've got interference problems or difficulties when you have placed the cover over the engine?

How did you hit and drill holes in the insulation? I see them well made.

Have you noticed any improvement over the previous condition?

Let us know how it goes and keep us informed after you've tested it.

A question for everyone, on your Freel2 the original insulation was (or still is) as the first or second picture?
Obviously, you indicate the model and year of production of your Freel2.
