It looks like you may be and I'm in one of the rip off areas. It almost seems as though the farther away from an oil refinery the cheaper it is. ( no research involved ) |

You might well be right in that assertion....one of the cheapest places in the country, perversely, is Watford in Herts....nowhere near a refinery (not since Buncefield in Hemel Hempstead went bang a few years ago!) |

Hi All Just done a 1100 mile round trip down south to Reading from Fife, Scotland. I did a full to brim-to-brim test going down, refilled when I got down there, Averaged 38.3mpg, better coming back at 40.2, overall average 39.25. pretty happy with that considering my HSE Auto (MY08) has 90k on the clockand we weren't hanging about! Mix of all roads M8, M9, M74 Dual Carriageways, M6, M42, M40 A40 etc... plus some town driving, (not too mention Road Works and Detours!) BUT... the Avg.MPG on the Computer was 34.1? so the the actual was 5+mpg more? AND... the 'Range' always shows a max of about 470... so in theory no chance of getting down on one tank full (465 miles door to door) but we did easily! ..... the range goes to ZERO when I still have 1/4 tank left!! Anyone had experience of this and if it is possible to re-calibrate the Computer? |

My quoted range on the computer has always seemed pretty accurate, normally about 540 miles when full (although I once saw it above 600) shows about 50 when the low-fuel warning pings in.

The range indicated I get is similar to yours Worms. It is not possible to get an accurate range prediction as measuring accurately the quantity of fuel slopping around in a tank is not possible. Also, the computer can only have information about the mpg you have previously achieved and it cannot predict how, where and when you will drive so at best range is only a guestimate.

my manual my09 TD4 with 95K is doing circa 40 mpg which is ok for me. One thing I've noticed is that long runs only add a small improvement to the consumption. For example this weekend saw a really leisurely 500 miles on the motorway between North Wales and the northern Lakes, all at circa 60 mph which returned just over 42mpg. Comparing that to my more normal short journeys on rural roads and some fast dual carriageway which returns 40mpg.

Just back from a journey in one of the work cars, a VW Sharan. Mix of motorway, town centre and fast B roads. Showing an indicated 49mpg on its trip computer. Not a bad return for a big 7 seater, pity the Fl2 doesn't even come close! Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

If fuel economy really is high on your list of things that matter you could always trade up to a 2 wheel drive Freelander2.

65078 miles, short drives, traffic jams, motorways and A roads “making progress” to Scottish single track roads with passing places and a little off road gets me a running average of 33.37 MPG. Min 26.6 and max 41 mpg, brim to brim. |
