If you compare the avarage temps between the cool and damp UK and the Australian outback then mayby you do need something different !!!

Just had the engine oil changed in my Jan 8 FL2 SE auto changed at 6,500 miles with Morris of Shrewsbury 5W30 fully synthetic low ash oil(If its good enough for Bently at Crewe its good enough for me) and the original oil was as black as the hobs of hell and as thin as water.
Having said that it had not dropped below the full mark in the first 6,500 miles but maybe it was thin because the first 4,50 miles where as a dealer demo car. Life Honorary Member of Wallasey Motor Club.

Hi everyone
I believe the Ford norm is outdated and FL2 engine needs more sophisticated motor oil.
There is one main problem, though.
My local dealer declares warranty void if not Ford recommended oil is used.
Provided we bring the oil we'd like , the dealer put a black stamp in the service book for pronouncing warranty "void".
This is most disturbing....

You can use Mobil one in the UK if you want. The reason why it may be the preferred oil in Aus is because the operating conditions of the engine out there are somewhat different to the conditions in the UK and the spec of the oil may be that one brand of oil is better in those conditions than another. You have this bright disk in the sky which tends to make the air very hot.................................. we don't seem to have such a thing up here in the UK Mr. Green Mr. Green How can carbon have a footprint, it has no feet?

Germany 2007 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Auto Stornoway Grey

New development in Germany:
Landrover has officially informed all dealers and workshops in Germany that the Ford oil norm WSS...913 B for the TD4 engines of the Freelander 2 is out and invalid. Landrover now follows the European car manufacturers in approving all motor oils which meet the ACEA B3 or B4 standards for engines without DPF and ACEA C2 or C3 for engines with DPF.
This LR-decision follows a high court judgement under which Landrover is obliged to take back all Freelander 2 with DPF-problems, which are proven to have resulted in the use of wrong motor oils. As Landrover does not belong to the Ford group of companies any longer, they have taken a big step forward and accepted the long established European oil norm as laid down in the ACEA norms.

Just done 8000 Mile change to Castrol Edge 5W30 (B3/B4 meets MB 229.51 but seems to be branded to target VW and Audi owners) and will be interested to see if I can detect any difference.

The sump plug torque was low when I undid it - certainly because the thread it is an insert into the pressed steel pan. Can anyone tell me what the tightening torque should be? (I had to guess but not overtighten)

Also noted that one of the sump guard bolts had a stripped thread from the factory - any other instances of this? Gone... 2013 XS TD4 Manual Firenze Red

I know this has most likley been covered before?

I have just topped up ( approx 1L) my TD4 engine with Castrol Edge Turbo diesel 0W-30 oil. I did not notice until I had done the deed that I picked up the wrong bottle. Sad Will this oil be O.K.? I have read so much about engine oils that my head hurts!! Very Happy

The spec for the oil is:

API SM/CF
ACEA A3/B3, A3/B4, C2, C3
BMW Longlife-04
MB 229.31/229.51
VW 505 00/502 00

My car came back from 1st service (Main Dealer) with a 1 ltr bottle of Shell Helix Ultra 5w 40 in the car - that's what they filled it with so it must meet LRs spec

Maybe a daft question - but maybe not? Are all synthetic oils compatible with one another? I am assuming that the oil used at manufacture is synthetic (not sure what type). Although mine has dropped a touch since new it's not yet required any more but it has been on my mind to get some.

I have done 25K km, and changed the oil 3 times now (twice myself) and once by the Dealer during the routine 1st service. At all times Shell Ultra Helix has been used (I provided it to the Dealer also).
Shell Ultra Helix is a top spec oil - way exceeding the standard LR/Ford requirements - so your Dealer has done a great job on your FL2. Thumbs Up
They could have used the stockpiled Castrol rubbish............ Big Cry

As Northsea Medic say's I'm assuming your all refering to fully synthetic oil and are they all compatible with each other.
Do LR use it from new in all FL2's?

Checked the dipstick yesterday and I need to top mine up, so will any decent 5w-30 fully synthetic do?

Flycop: yes, your motor oil is fully compatible and safe.
Northsea Medic: yes, all motor oils are compatible - i. e. mixable, even mineral with synthetic.

Hi - just for interest - the wifes Merc (sorry only A160) was in the Merc dealership for an MOT today and I noted in the Service Department that they were promoting Mobil 1 ESP Formula 5W-30. This was one of YF's recommendations I recall. The leaflet I picked up states it meets all the latest specs for oil as recommended by Mercedes, VW, Audi & BMW so should be good enough for LR. Interesting to read what some of the LR dealers are using during servicing - hopefully all are following the correct standard - do LR carry out spot checks on this or are dealers put on trust?
