United Kingdom 2014 Freelander 2 SD4 Metropolis LE Auto Fuji White

We went to the BBC Garden Show at the NEC.

As I had filled up (and reset counters) a mile or so from home I had a good record of what the car recorded.

204 miles travelled at a overal recorded average of exactly 60mph and a fuel consumption of 35.6 MPG.

This ties up well with my Sat Nav and Google distance to travel and from past measurements the mpg is a couple of mpg optomistic - so about 33.5 mpg actual.

I think these figures are reasonable good and the average includes car parks, road works, services stations, although some 99 miles each way is all motorway. Also torrential rainstorms and sunny spells both ment the air-conditioning was on for about a third of the time.

I still am impressed by the feeling of security, and ease of travel, I get in my FL2. Where possible I (control) cruised at 71mph on my GPS system (about 73-4mph on the slightly optomistic speedo). The FL2 seems to be able to do this all day up hill and down dale.

Very Pleased - Thank You FL2 FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

Actually to “top this up” I drove the D5 a lot more for the past few days than before, well more miles down here I mean and to be truthful it is actually a very, very nice car.....she (DiL) has the HSE (240D I think) and it drove very well, didn’t feel too big, which it obviously is Laughing along our lanes, but when it was parked on the drive arse facing the house, damn it has one ugly big back end, and Imam not referring to the much maligned signature offset licence plate, just the size of the sheet metal below said plate......like a section of HMS QE2 got misplaced Rolling with laughter

Having said all that I much prefer the petrol i6 in my FL2......and I don’t think the FL2 is that far behind, maybe on technology but on actual road manners and driving pleasure, not a lot in it TBH. Regards

David

Managed to match cruise control for the first time.

There's a long medium hill on the way up to ours where the speed limit drops from national to 40 due to roadworks, and then goes back up again after, still on the upslope.

Every time I increase the speed setting (gradually) on the cruise when leaving the speed restriction, the Freelie never drops a gear.

When I've tried this without the cruise, it always drops down a gear, no matter how hard I concentrate on applying gradual soft pedal pressure, etc... It had become a bit of an obsession I am sad to admit, much to SWMBO's amusement at my expense.

... Until today. Motivated even further by her reckless bet of the paying the bill for this evening's dinner if I succeeded, this evening I got that speed up manually without dropping a gear...yeehah!

... and in case you're wondering, yes I went for the expensive steak!! Very Happy Lexus RX450H - 500 mile a week commuter- I just couldn’t trust in a newer RRS or DS for that….
2009 Freelander 2 HSE... 155K miles, we’ve done 135k of those, has done brilliantly on the commute and staying firmly put as car two in the household
2002 Jaguar XK8 Coupe... fun, fast, ours for 12 years and owes us nothing - so staying with us too…

Yesterday my car was configured as a 'Day Trip' load carrier, with one seat down to accommodate my wife's Mobility Scooter and make room for Cooler, Coats, Umbrellas, etc.

Today it was configured with both seats down ((with load floor cover fitted) to run to the Recycling Centre, and I reset the trip computer to check short journey with cold start..

I did 8.8 miles, averaging 30.1 mpg at 27mph.

I then reconfigured the seats up and became a luxury car once more. Leaving the trip running we went to do our shopping (and an ice cream whilst parked on sea front).

On getting home the reading was now 12.1 miles, averaging 25.3 mpg at 21 mph.

My conclusions
The FL2 is very expensive to run for short journeys.
The FL2 is very versatile and handy to own. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

Drove to a cottage near the Brecon Beacons - on a private estate, stream running around two sides, sheep on the other. It’s just so quiet here, fabulous, shame we’re only here for the week then it’s back home with the buses running past the front door.

Sid
While you are there, take the A470 south from Brecon over the pass to Merthyr Tydfil (and beyond).
It's one of my favourite roads, scenery fabulous.
Also Abergavenny has a good market on Tuesdays.
Have a nice time, it's a nice part of the world. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

As my Agronomist son is visiting from Kenya I went along with him to see some crop trials at a research centre open day in Hampshire. Attendees were agronomists and farmers. Out of about 50 vehicles parked in the field there was one newish Evoque, One 65 reg DS , about half a dozen FL2 and a few older Discos. Oh and one Defender. The newer vehicles were predominantly Hilux/L200/Navara pickups.
My son commented that six or seven years ago the field would have been full of LandRovers and mainly FL2s. Sad really. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Sad but true, on the farm in Norfolk we have several 4X4 but all (except my daughters iPace Laughing ) are Japanese pick ups, why would you not.....need to jump in all hours and just go, we have a couple that are not road reg’ed anymore and obviously just pure farm hacks, they work every time although being totally neglected.

I cannot remember that last time I saw a LR (discounting posh FFRR for road use!) on a local farm. Regards

Got back from Wales at beginning of the week and planning to head back in September. Never been to that area before and it's beautiful (even if the dual-language is a pita Wink ) If there's anyone on here that lives in that area, you are indeed very lucky

Nice stop by Storey Arms ( no longer pub ) if you like a hike go straight up Pen-y-Fan, views if clear are breathtaking. If it wasn't so bad it'd be funny.

Loaded our mobility scooter into the boot and headed off too another favourite market day at Devizes in Wiltshire.

All fits very nicely.
The scooter (minus the battery and seat) is ratchet-strapped to the floor on the extended NSR.
The battery is secured up behind the OSR passengers backrest, with the scooter seat folded on the floor behind.
The elastic straps are used to stop things rattling around.
The OSR seat base is raised and the Coolbox is strapped to it's (raised) underside and plugged into the centre console.

Great day out, I recommend it. The market has been going since 1141. (the year, not the time)

Just returned from a couple of days on the Isle of Wight. I know that the island isn't very big but what I did notice was that most roads are not really suited to a SD4 auto as there is hardly anywhere where you can get it above 3rd or 4th gear. I noticed that my fuel consumption increased markedly and that was with me using the tiptronic/manual function to nudge it up a gear at times. It also felt odd driving off a ferry and not having to worry about driving on the wrong side of the road but apparently they have been part of England since 1293 so that's OK. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto
