Selecting Gears

Hi everyone,
My girlfriend today purchased Her first Freelander 2. Its a 2007 2.2 manual.

I had a drive tonight & found it very difficult to select 5th-6th gear. Maybe its just me as I have never driven a 4x4 before, but I felt like the first 4 gears were easy to select but as I pushed the stick over to the right to select 5th It would go to far each time.

once I actually manage to select 5th it feels like im moving the gearstick about 1mm from the 3rd gear selection.

Please advise (without to much mick taking) This is how i imagine the gear selector looks

My gears are in this configuration, with reverse gear been locked out above 5mph(IIRC)

I don't recall any difficulty selecting gears Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

I am expeirncing similar problems when selecting fifth and sixth, it is as if the stop that normally restricts you going into reverse once the car is moving is not operating properly.

I mentioned it the dealer a few weeks ago when the car was in for the recall, however he said everything was fine and when I got the car back it was fine. A few days later I started experiencing the same problem. I have not been back to them yet, to busy.

One thing that has happened twice now is that when I went for fifth gear and ended up going to far to the right the gear lever has locked in position, in neutral above reverse. In both instances I had to stop the car so that I could select reverse and this then freed up the gear stick and I could drive on.

I will get it to the dealers when I get back from a short trip away next week, I would advise the same, it sounds like a gear selector / gearbox problem.

cheers

chris

Sounds like a gear selector cable needs adjusting/replacing?

The gap I have shown between 1-3, 2-4 is to illustrate that i actually push the lever to the left when selecting 1,3 but 5,6 feel like they are far to close to 3,4.

Maybe I'm just mental (lol) but the girlfriend also said it didnt seem right.

The same fault developed on mine after a visit to the dealers to fix the recall, and they came out next day to collect the car and fix the gear fault. Fine now. FL2 TD4 S Baltic Blue, with twin electrics and towbar, roofrails, luggage cover, spare wheel and mudflaps.

When I got my FL2 back from having the replacement PTC heater fitted, I had a similar problem to the one you described re the gear selection. Fifth and sixth gears were hard to find and the lock to prevent selection of reverse when above 5mph did not work (luckily I didn't find it by mistake Shocked ).

The stealer took it back in and their explanation was that a solenoid had been disconnected to enable the fitting of the new PTC heater and had not been reconnected Rolling Eyes It's fine again now and the distance between third and fifth say is no different than that between first and third.

Might be worth suggesting that they check this solenoid (assuming their story is true)? GONE - 2011/11 Freelander 2 SD4 XS Auto

I took the car back today & they said sometimes the solenoid is not replaced after the heater recall is done. In our case the solenoid is actually where it should be, just not working.
So, I now have to book the car in for a full new gear shift assembly.

Thanks for all the help everyone.
