I had the occasional engine stops in traffic which then developed to random jerkiness at speed which then developed to engine cutting out during an overtake and also that same message. Read the codes and it was the crankshaft position sensor. Changed that and all good since. However, with that poor fuel consumption it sounds as though your's might be something else. Thanks BossBob, I'll get my mechanic to do the check, it was he that fitted the recon transfer box. BTW, the car was cutting out before I had that fitted but the fuel consumption was a bit better @ 26/29 mpg. I was thinking after a bit of research that my problem might just be the fuel pump .... what do think ? Many thanks Marcus |

You’ve also got 2 fuel pumps. One in the fuel tank pumping fuel over the drive shaft tunnel and a high pressure pump driven by a cam shaft that sucks fuel from the tank to supply to the fuel rail. The fuel filter needs changing at each service and the system needs to be properly bled. A blocked filter can stop the engine, which will miraculously restart a few minutes or hours later. The camshaft to fuel pump linkage is the weak point on earlier cars with the end of the camshaft fracturing and bits falling into the engine.

Make sure it's a genuine fuel filter, many have had problems with cheaper copies.

Yes just one filter, located in the engine compartment under the black engine cover. It needs to be properly primed with fuel. There are guides on the forum. Some make sure they plug all the lines as they remove the old filter, fill the new filter with fuel and fit it, others plug lines, fit the filter then use a vacuum pump to draw fuel from the tank through the filter. Either way, the idea is to get rid of air in the line to the high pressure pump to the fuel rail. |

My thanks go to Pedro, Dave and BossBob for the information they have provided. I looked on the internet and have sent the fitting guide (video) to my mechanic and reminded him to only use the genuine replacement part.
