Im not precious about the bikes, if they get covered in all sorts of Censored on the trails why worry about a bit of rain or road spray. Very Happy

It's for that reason I always hang my bike off the back (don't want the interior messed up with mud & oil) Wink

Rack has 8 point contact, secured to bodywork.
Bike is then attached and secured to rack.
..... it ain't moving & it ain't going anywhere! Thumbs Up

What rack is that? I've looked and none are ever quoted as fitting the FL2. Bought one anyway and wasn't happy with the security in terms of it not falling off! Plus it stopped the rear wiper working and partially covered the reg plate which I imagine isn't legal. Would love to find one that fits! FL2 TD4 GS 60 reg Facelift - so many issues

Sold DS for a 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. Fingers crossed....
Sold Outlander for a 2014 SD4 SE Tech because I’m mental
Now greatly regret selling the Outlander. MPG of the FL2 is atrocious and so are the fuel bills. Fun though 😎
Couldn’t afford the fuel bills so back to an older Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. Significantly better than I remembered it to be…

Its a pet hate of mine when someone sticks a bike or two on the back of a car and obscures not just a number plate but rear lights as well. Its illegal, and while you may get not pulled up for it, if someone runs into the back of your car and claims your lights were obscured, you will have an insurance fight on your hands. Updated- Waiting for a Scotland v England 6 Nations home win. 24th Feb 2018

A rack looks like it would be a lot easier.

For security, I would prefer to put them inside. We often go out somewhere for the day and then stop off at a pub for a late lunch or dinner. Bikes get stolen in busy areas without people even noticing, breaking into a vehicle and trying to pull some bikes out isn't something an opportunist thief would do.

To avoid the marks inside, I could buy a bootliner and some full zip up bike covers.

I suppose I need to buy some bikes and give it a go.

Mine is just an old Paddy Hopkirk that I've had for years and adapted to fit every car I've had since.
It's sat on the rear screen with four rubber suckers, two (rubber protected) strap hooks going over top of tailgate and one each to the lower sides of the screen.
The wiper is unusable when on, but I could've fitted the bottom section below the wiper (just one thing I didn't get around to).
When the bike is on, I tie on a number plate (fitted to two old lengths of inner tube).
No need for a light board as all lights are uncovered and in full view. FL2 now gone and have a couple of items left for sale:-

Brodit active iPhone holder + Brodit dash clip,
Bluetooth Music Streaming Module.

mine is basically the same as yours Ron, bought from Decathlon several years ago for about £50, secures with 2 straps over the top, 2 to the sides and 2 to the bottom. I have a basic light board which then hangs off the back as due to the size of bikes I generally carry the lights are obscured. Cant use the rear wiper though but then you cant see much through the mesh of bike frames, wheel spokes and straps anyway.

For security I just lock the bikes together and to the rack using standard bike locks. Stops 99% of scrote bags but if one really wants to nick them no amount of security will stop them.

@Dom.... that is very tight fit. Guessing you strap it down to the lashing points to stop it bouncing through the roof ?

Yeah I strap it down on the chain stay to the two anchor points nearest the boot lid. Doesn't go anywhere then. Very Happy Freelander 2 XS 2013

You could stick some clear protective tape over that small area just to keep it nice. Regards

I know you don't want the faff of a bike rack on the roof but the BrassKnuckles racks from RockyMounts makes life easy plus they don't grab onto the frame so no potential scratches either!

I just take small set of steps with me to get the bikes up on the roof.

A roof rack could be a good option. It looks like they'll be easier to secure. I've got a standard mountain bike on order, I'm thinking about getting an E bike next, I don't know if I'd want to put a 22kg bike up there.

I'm picking 2 bikes up next Tuesday. I'll let you know how I get on.

buy folding mountain bikes, I got two in my i6, tight squeeze though. Common sense isn't very common.
