Common faults to look out for

Hi All

Newbie who hasn't yet purchase a Freelander 2 but i will be shortly.
Im looking at a 2013 Land Rover Freelander 2 2.2 TD4 GS 4X4 5dr they say it is a face lift model it has covered 85k miles

are there any common faults or niggles that i should be looking out for ?

I would be very grateful for any advice.

Check all doors lock and open as they should mine is older than what you’re looking at there will be people along with more relevant info for you Thumbs Up

Have a look at the wheel arches the rubber strips are prone to deforming and maybe missing check there is no corrosion around there.

I would suggest going on to the gov mot history checker.

You should get a good feel if the car has reoccurring issues, has it been looked after. If it fly through all MOT the chances are its a very well looked after.

Look for the following.
Oil leaks
Tyre tread - these are big tyres and expensive.
Electrics - Wing mirrors - windows - seats
if you have a car fault reader then use this to see if there are any stored codes.

These cars have a weak rear diff - so listen for knocks and grinds - find an open spaces and give it a few full turns lock to lock manoeuvers.

The big big service is due at 100K/ 10 years. So consider this when buying - expect to pay around £900-1000 at an indy garage - Cam belt, water pump, heldex oil filter, gearbox oil, rear diff oil etc etc.

If its a manual - has the clutch been replaced? they often go around the 80K mark. if you plan on towing something heavy then reversing will eat its way through a clutch very quickly. The gearing of reverse is like 2nd gear.

These are complicated cars - and as such they need to be looked after. Find a good one and you will have a great car.

One i wished I'd done would have been whipping the engine cover off - looking for build up of crabon/muck around each injector sugesting leaking. Could happen to any diesel, so not Freelander2 specific, but sure stuck in my mind.

I bought one coming up to the big service mark as well and totally agree on the big service items - find out what's been done and slowly tick them off the list so it's not one huge service fee in one go. Do research and purchasing own parts/oil etc worked out a poop-ton cheaper for me, but then I'm not in the Motherland like you chaps.

Aircon blowing cold? What i assumed was just needing refill turned into a new condenser.

Research Haldex noises and issues and that service will probably get put to the top of the to-do list.

Glowplugs are all dead in mine, but not such a big issue as not like i'm digging the car out of snow in the mornings. Will get around to them.

Spare key? You'll be wanting to get one if not. Modern car dramas with coding a new key get exponentially worse if you lose your only key first.

Sure, i've run into some issues in my first year, but still hell of a car. Now i'm on top of all the servicing and fixed all the abuse she's had, I'm very confident in her. If something bad happened to her I'd buy another.

Check underneath:
It shouldnt be very rusty - surface rust only IMO but some have been dipped in the sea (launching boats etc) and are very rusty.
Look for signs of off-roading - dents , gouges and mud in places it wouldnt usually get too if it had only road use .

Service history: has the gearbox and haldex had any extra service work (eg oil / filter change)

Check every electrical option/device is working Jules

Cambelt change service has been moved to 7 years from 10 for some versions. It’s not something that you want to miss as having a cam belt break is another world of pain in the wallet.

One thing I saw when buying mine a few weeks back: in front of the rear wheels, up in the sill area is a plastic (I think) plug about 8cm square - if this area is full of dirt / mud, check carefully for corrosion as the wet mud holds moisture close to the metal. Current: FL2 TD4 2008 HSE
