Bike rack while towing

Hi all,

We are going away at the end of May camping and are hoping to take 3 bikes with us. Problem is, with the camper hitched I won’t have enough clearance between the camper and the bikes when turning.

The only solution I can come up with without putting them on the camper or in the boot is to raise the bike rack.

Has anybody ever mounted their bike rack like this or have any thoughts?

Thanks

Ben

Oddly I just answered about my trailer and bike rack on another thread, we had a trailer (years ago now) and I had a rack built that fitted to the trailer between the hitch A frame and the axle line, worked a treat.

Will your rack not lay more flat on the trailer itself rather than taking up space at the A frame area? Regards

David

Lovely i6 has now gone, but not me......

Please let me know if anything in my post offends you, as I may wish to offend you again......

Hi David,

Thanks for your reply. I have seen the racks that you describe but I would need to make it myself. I only have 10 days until we are away so I wouldn’t have time.

The idea about laying the rack on the trailer is a good idea but the rack supports the frame of the bike not the wheels so I don’t think it would work. Unless I have misunderstood you (apologies if I have).

Thanks

Ben

Perhaps a bit expensive, but could you change the towbar to a flange type and get a hitch mounted rack?

Having the top part of the frame that close to the edge of the roof I'd be concerned about it over riding the roof causing the possibility of the top support straps bouncing out. It might be better mounted underneath the high level brake light.

I used to mount my frame high like that to save the bikes obscuring the rear number plate and rear lights on the wife's Civic.

Watch out for car park height barriers.

This is pushing all the carpark height restrictions and some railway bridges too!

Have always adapted my bike rack and mounted my carrier like this.
Had it on previous cars, D3, D4 and shown below, FL2.
Always been solid as a rock, but then I was only carrying 1 bike.
(My rack is for sale though, as I now have an e-mountain bike that requires a towbar mounted carrier)

FL2 now gone and have a couple of items left for sale:-

Brodit active iPhone holder + Brodit dash clip,
Bluetooth Music Streaming Module.

You might want to consider something like this for future use. This rack is about 12 years old - newer ones allow better separation of multiple bikes.
The bikes dont get in the way of the towing hitch and you can lift the bikes and carrier off the car in one go so you can open the hatch.
