After market roof rails

I've started a thread in the wanted section but maybe not reaching many members?
I plan to get set of roof rails to allow fitting bike carriers, would like to fit a second hand set if anyone has a set for sale, failing that there are a number of aftermarket sets available on Ebay and from companies such as powerfuluk ranging from £100 - 160 ish. Looking to hear members views of these if anyone has fitted and used these? Are they durable and comparable with the genuine LR bars?
Thanks. Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

I bought a set of Whispbars that bolt in to the roof so are nice and permanent. Have been very happy with them so far. I wasn't keen on the ones that clamped round the roof/door opening long term. FL2 TD4 GS 60 reg Facelift - so many issues

Sold Outlander for a 2014 SD4 SE Tech because I’m mental
Now greatly regret selling the Outlander. MPG of the FL2 is atrocious and so are the fuel bills. Fun though 😎
Couldn’t afford the fuel bills so back to an older Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. Significantly better than I remembered it to be…

how much and where from for the Whispbars please Chuck ?

do they mount into the same threaded holes in the roof under the plastic trim that the factory fit rails bolt into ?

They were from roofbox.co.uk for about £180. And yes you for them into the same fixing points. FL2 TD4 GS 60 reg Facelift - so many issues

cheers Thumbs Up

I had only looked at the 3rd box option on their website for the clamp type bars.

ive found some Pre Alpina ones for about £70 less and they are a good make, although not as good as pro-rack whispbar im guessing, and they appear to fix into the standard mounting points too.

is it just a case of prising off the plastic trim, drilling holes through the pre-marked positions and bolting in ? easy job ?

You'll need grub screws, I think that's what they are called. Essentially they screw into the holes in the roof creating the new mounting points for the rack feet. Or at least the Whispbars did. But otherwise yes, lift, drill, screw, fit. FL2 TD4 GS 60 reg Facelift - so many issues

Says they are "clamps" - not sure if that's what you're looking for. I would consider clamps to be ones that fit around the body. FL2 TD4 GS 60 reg Facelift - so many issues

yeh looks like your right.... the description doesn't really match the images on any of the places ive looked, so looks like clamps rather than bolt in

Cant really justify £180 for the Whispbars as they wont get enough use to warrant the cost.

Or maybe im just being too fussy Laughing

I'm also using Whispbars. I bought a pair cheap off ebay and separately bought the feet that screw onto the roofline. All fairly straightforward, although the supplied grub screw was far too long. I replaced them with shorter stainless M6 set screws so I could use a spanner to fit them rather than a hex key.

I would have like to use the powerfuluk mountings, which they do sell separately. I didn't have time to wait for delivery though.

Just another way to skin the cat. MY11 SD4 SE Auto

I've also considered buying the Wisperbars https://bit.ly/2DB0rL6 , but they suggest that these roof bars are not to be fitted to a Freelander with a sunroof.

Quote:
You won't be able to use the sunroof with these bars fitted. When you close the sunroof the feet brush against the glass slightly, this activates the safety feature that prevents the sunroof from closing.

I think the best bet for me are the Cruz rails https://bit.ly/2QnXj9N -------------------------------------------------------------

Not for me. I quite like the integrated look of the Land Rover roof solutions (Thule). Guy Pensa

Not what I'm after guys, I'm meaning roof rails, not cross bars. I've already got universal cross bars with bike carriers attached that will clamp onto the longitudinal rails. I'm looking for folks experiences fitting the rails and what the quality is like. Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948
