Noisy starting...

Hi Guys,

All of a sudden my FL2 (2010 SD4) sounds like the starter motor is located inside the cabin when I start the car. No issue with it starting...just now it sounds like the starter motor and flywheel are behind the central satnav screen.

Any ideas?

Dz

Difficult. Clutching at straws here - Pollen filter not fitted or not in properly? Grommet at base of steering column displaced. Or could be starter motor on it’s way out. Check the three securing bolts are tight.

Well things have moved on a bit.

Along with the starting noise...it started to whine under acceleration and then when taking your foot of the accelerator, you had a 'click' then a scuffing sound...until you reapplied power...then the whine...

The car has been with my local LR dealer here in Southampton for 3.5wks now. Having been serviced by them and MOT'ed in December...

They have now replaced:

The front left driver shaft....
TPU (3 of them...as the first was DOA and the 2nd leaked oil...)
The real diff main bearing...

Then said it was fixed....a quick drive down the road and the whine remains...back to the dealer...

Just found out it needs a new gearbox!

Glad to see the warranty was worth it.

I have to say that I expected a little more from a land rover with only 78K on the clock. Big Cry

New gearbox? Do not understand why it made the noise at standstill then........are they sure it’s not the DMF? Regards

The initial noise (loud starter motor) was at standstill but the rest was on the move.

They did show me a short video of the drive shaft which showed a flange that had come lose on the drive shaft and freely rotating. They said that would have been causing the scuffing noise.

Update and some interesting bits.

It's taken 1 month but the car is now fixed (touch wood). Thumbs Up

They have replaced:

n/s/f drive shaft
Power Transfer Unit
Carried out low level rear diff repairs (Bearing + oil)
Automatic Transmission

With all the bolts, fluids etc the total was £9,430. Thank god for the warranty...I've not had to pay a penny. Whistle

Not surprising but it now sounds and drives like a new car. The starter motor sounds like it's back in the engine compartment rather than the glove box, what I thought was tyre noise has gone, the whine...gone and the scuffing...gone.

The other interesting thing was I always thought the strange noise when pulling away in first was a design fault...nope, that's gone now as well.

The gearbox is a little reluctant to change i.e. it holds a low gear longer than before when going up a hill and when cruising on the motorway it is happy to stay in top gear even when doing 50mph in a contraflow @ 1400rpm.

I was hoping it would resolve the warm weather stutter when going from 1st-2nd but that happened again yesterday. At least I now know it's not the gearbox. The only problem is the issue is difficult to replicate on command as it needs the weather to be warm and also the engine (neither of which often occurs at this time of year in the UK).

Regards,

Dz

Farkin' hell that was a cracker of a bill! Praise the warranty god's! FL2 TD4 GS 60 reg Facelift - so many issues
2019 DS. Terribly unreliable.
Sold DS for a 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. Fingers crossed....
Sold Outlander for a 2014 SD4 SE Tech because I’m mental
Now greatly regret selling the Outlander. MPG of the FL2 is atrocious and so are the fuel bills. Fun though 😎
Couldn’t afford the fuel bills so back to an older Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. Significantly better than I remembered it to be…

im surprised they paid out that much due to the repair cost in relation to the vehicle value but its a great result for you Thumbs Up Very Happy

the gearbox might still be relearning your driving style after all the work as the gearbox ECU adjusts according to driving style but takes a few hundred miles to learn.

as for the warm weather stutter its never been solved categorically however .... and I risk incurring the wrath of some on on here..... a sensible remap may well help.

im hoping to budget in a trip to Alive tuning to get them to do mine, as I believe it genuinely smooths out the acceleration, improves gear changes and hopefully gives slightly better MPG.

The stutter is back...and this time a bit more predicable.

If I drive for about 15mins, then park up (Dad Taxi) with the engine running for another 10-15mins, within minutes of pulling away the stutter will occur. It's almost like it's clearing it's throat.

Any chance it could be fuel related?

Haven't a clue but just putting options there Thumbs Up If it wasn't so bad it'd be funny.

Im inclined to agree with JulesK above. Try changing the fuel filter as a relatively inexpensive starting point.

It had a full service (including fuel filter) in Dec18 <1K miles.

If it was happening at the same rev's then I would understand the 'fuel' thinking but it's not. It's 'only' when going from 1st into 2nd (auto box).

Are you sure? I was under the impression that the Freelander pulled away in 2nd, and 1st was reserved for severe gradients when using a combination of Terrain Response/HDC and CommandShift?

Are you talking about shifting manually when this happens, or when in D and pulling away from 2nd to 3rd?

The other possibility is that the fuel filter is duff, or you have contamination/blockage somewhere...
