Roof rack options for FL2 with sunroof

I have researched this and other forums amd spoken to the distributors of Whispbar.

The impression I am getting is that the fixed point Whispbar mount would foul the sunroof if it is opened.

I see that a door mounted mount has been used with the sunroof on this forum although I am not clear of the sunroof can be opened with it on.

Short of getting high roof rails has anyone mounted any type of roof rack with a sunroof and managed to open the sunroof?

I am particularly keen on Whispbar, but happy to consider anything that works well.

Thanks!!

Have fitted a Thule Roof bar and feet (door mount) to my Freelander and with it in place you can still open the sunroof.

Hi, I have recently fitted "Cruz" Airo roof bars (door fixing) and there is no problem opening the sun roof. I went to the south of France with the bars fitted and a 370 ltr. roof box. Wind noise was not a problem and the fuel consumption increase was about 10% but that included 5 adults with all their gear cruising at 75-80mph. Without the top box the increase in noise was hardly noticeable.

I have a set of door frame mounted Whispbars. Sunroof operation is unaffected. Incidentally, I have only recently fitted a full LR roof rail set with LR cross bars so the Whispbars could be available if interested. I can confirm they are the quietest bars I have known, very impressive.

Yes, I second this, as I opted for this solution. 2013 SE TD4 in Mauritius Blue [Written off]

I also went with the Thule bars, mine are the black box section type. Picked them up pretty cheap on the usual auction site, they do they job although the wind noise is a bit annoying. 2010 HSE SD4 in Santorini black

Ian. As you will see above, my experience was with the Whispbars. As I recall, with those the feet were half on the door frame, half on the “gutter” strip, a little further inboard. They were compatible with the sunroof. Later on, as I recall, Whispbars were offered with a bolt-on fitting through the gutter strips. Those are not compatible with the sunroof.

I am not familiar with the brand you have selected however, I see the diagrams suggest the feet are on the gutter strip. Accordingly I would be wary and write to the manufacturer first for confirmation.

Thanks Dunkley
You have made it a bit clearer about what to look for.

I have tried PM to Georgetina asking if Bars in my link are the same as he mentions in the thread. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

I cannot remember the numbers but you need the “plain roof” fitting with the bracket that hooks over the door aperture as shown in the third pic below the bar end. I had the “flush bars” not the “through bars”. Very neat.

the whispbars are very good... I bought Dunkleys off him for my last FL2 (2013 HSE with sunroof and no factory rails)

brilliant rails, very quiet

and I stupidly sold them on when I sold the car Big Cry ... and now ive gone back to FL2
