OK......investigated the earth lead, looks OK but removed cleaned the contact areas and replaced with some copaslip for good measure.

Interestingly when turning ignition on now I get an "HDC warning inoperative" and the small arrowed circle with the triangle warning stays lit in the cluster (stability control).

I feel this might be getting closer to a conclusion, but not one I will be able to cure by fiddling!

The battery seems fine now, trickle charger (more expensive clever little box) indiscated full and off load it read 13.6 volts after 30 minutes this had settled to 12.8 volts, I will check in the morning though. Regards

David

Now you've got the HDC message, I'll wade in. New starter motor time. Everything you've said , which now includes the HDC message, is exactly what happened to me. New starter motor, problem solved ! Although I was £120 down after buying a new battery first. Rolling Eyes

However, try to get someone to press the start button while you give the starter motor a clout. Hard to do in such a confined space, but this will prove conclusively whether the starter is at fault as if you clout it correctly, it will try to turn the engine over.

Thanks, I had thought the starter might be an issue, I have exhausted all my 1970’s technical expertise Laughing

Unfortunately it’s an i6 so getting to the starter for the required clo.......errr.......persuasion will be tricky, but hey ho, worth a go with a broom handle and lump hammer!

The saga continues, update later Rolling Eyes Regards

OK........I give up...........WTF (and that's not WHAT Laughing ) is the starter motor?

It's a deep engine! Cannot see it front left or right from the top, cannot see anything from the top at the back......

Is it an undershield off or just drop the front of the undershield to get to it?

Presently looking at the online repair manual.......jeez there's a lot of pages!

Found it.....ouch.....bottom rear of engine "in a recess" of the engine.....well unless I can see it through a wheel arch I ain't going to get to that I am afraid, bad enough for me just getting up and down on the floor, we buy SUV because of the easy ingress/egress (mobility issues) so I am not removing the undertray etc.....oh well.....I'll put the earth mod on (and replace the standard earth cable) in the mean time, and remove the sidesteps when it stops raining! Regards

David

Yes, a bit of a ball ache , needs to be jacked up and placed on axle stands. However, it's not that time consuming. I had mine done in less than 1/2 hour , so if you need to take it to a garage, it shouldn't be too expensive.

OK I gave in after testing the battery again over a couple of days, 2 hours after charge it reads 12.8 volts or there about, after considerably longer it reads 12.2 volts.........sitting in the vehicle with ign on and BMS being read it reads just 11.8 volts......this battery is long gone I think.

New one on top up charge now, will fit it in the morning and report back that the vehicle has burst into ever;asking life again Bow down

Don’t hold your breath though.... Laughing Regards

David,

you may have more than one problem

Based on you post's above you are able to get to power mode II

Confirm that the steering column lock is released (can you turn the wheel?)

See this link for a description of the power modes and some basic troubleshooting

https://www.freel2.com/forum/topic33506.html

If I were you I would also

Verify the fuse for the starter hasn't opened (Volt meter: verify battery voltage on both sides of the fuse)

And verify that relay and fuse for the Starter Solenoid are functioning.

I would just swap the relay and the fuse (Like for Like)

Fuse box shown is next to the battery

Let us know if this helps at all.

Note: your error codes sound like a problem on the CAN bus

Good Luck

Paul

Great thanks....

I did check and can hear the steering lock operate and indeed it does in fact release the wheel, also the fuse (starter motor) looks fine, although I will pop out this morning and swop both fuse and relay around, already did the Earth mod just in case.

It looks like there are several earth point under the air box (not sure how accurate the drawing is though as per positions) so I will lift the box and check there also.

Thumbs Up Regards

David

Relay and fuse swapped and also checked, both functioning fine.......but starter relay doesn’t seem to “click” when ign/starter sequence is initiated.

Fuseable link on B+ OK also.......I even checked (and changed because they were cr@p) the earth cable on the hatch (as mentioned in the link).

Still the same message on ign on.......system check......HDC fault. Regards

David

Took the starter relay out and jumped the main terminals with a link and the starter motor turned the engine over very healthily, but the engine will not start with ign on.

Checked the three “big” multi connectors in the passenger footwell, took apart jiggled and reinstated......no difference.

Wits end now......beautiful sunny hot day here, so might just sit in the sun and relax now......b0ll0x to it! Regards

PRINCIPLES OF OPERATION

Starting Process

The ECM will only allow engine crank, spark and injector functions when the following conditions are met:
* A hardwired Park/Neutral signal is received from the Transmission Control Module (TCM)
* A hardwired ignition signal is received from the CJB
* A hardwired crank request signal is received from the CJB
* Encrypted data exchange between the instrument cluster and the ECM is verified.

Before the CJB will send the hardwired ignition signal, it must satisfactorily complete the following:
* Exchange encrypted data with the start control module to validate the remote handset.

Additionally, before the CJB will send the hardwired crank request signal it must receive the following signals:
* Brake signal from the speed control inhibit switch
* Hardwired transmission in Park (P) or Neutral (N) signal from the selector lever assembly.

With the remote handset inserted in the start control module and the stop/start button is pressed, the start control module issues battery voltage high signal on the LIN bus connection to the CJB and the fuel pump is run for 2 seconds to prime the fuel system. The CJB uses this signal together with the stop lamp switch signal and issues a crank request message on the high speed CAN bus to the ECM.

The ECM, on receipt of the crank request message, then provides a power and ground supply to the starter relay in the BJB, closing the relay contacts. Battery voltage is supplied via a fuse through the starter relay and is passed to the starter motor solenoid coil. The coil is energized, closing the solenoid contacts and allowing a fuse battery voltage supply direct from the battery to operate the starter motor and crank the engine and simultaneously switch the fuel pump on.

The ECM operates the starter motor until the engine starts which is determined by the engine speed exceeding a pre-determined value.

Auto Start

The ECM has an auto start function which allows the engine to continue cranking if the stop/start button is released. The starter motor will operate until the engine starts or a pre-determined period of time has elapsed which is based on engine coolant temperature. Low engine coolant temperatures allow longer crank times. If the engine does not rotate or the engine speed is low, the ECM removes the power supply and ground from the starter relay stopping the crank process.

Start Prevention

Operation of the starter motor will not be allowed or will be interrupted if:
* The engine is running and the engine speed has exceeded a predetermined speed
* The encrypted data exchange between the instrument cluster, ECM, CJB and start control module has failed to:
-----> Identify the remote handset
* The gear selector lever is not in the park 'P' or neutral 'N' position.
----> The signal is determined from:
--------> a signal from the TCM and also the transmission mounted position switch
* The brake pedal is not pressed.

It’s working.......not sure exactly why though Rolling Eyes

Plugged in my carsoft analyser same fault codes all, popped up so I delved a bit deeper into each fault and after I found and reset the “engine control module” fault the engine started first time easily.......still had the HDC fault so went into ABS and Body Control Module faults and reset each one in turn and now the HDC is available (and I assume working).

Not taken it for a run yet as it’s now dark and I am hungry, so tomorrow it’s going for a run to the local garage to ask about oil changes etc (I am too old to crawl around getting oily nowadays), if they seem to know Landrovers (they are a small independent local garage which ALWAYS have old and newish LR of all sorts there being worked on as well as all other cars) if they see a bit vague we have a LR Specialist only 8 miles away who looked after my L322.

Fingers crossed, although I kinda hope,it throws another tantrum and the faults return as I don’t trust “repair by button pushing” an awful lot Shocked Regards

David
