Scotland 2010 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Auto Zermatt Silver
New Member With A Copart Bargain Or Disaster

Hi guys.....my first post and introduction!

As per the title I've picked up a 2010 FL2 GS bought from the infamous Copart salvaged and used car auction company. My first Land Rover. I was looking for something to tow the caravan and saw this Freelander come up on the Copart site and decided to take a gamble......a big gamble Shocked Bought unseen, going by the pictures and description only. A bit of fun I guess for the price paid with only 60k miles on the clock (confirmed with vehicles history) and I like messing about with cars so figured it was worth the risk! Time will tell on that one! Most cars Copart sell are written off accident damaged cars or stolen recovered and now owned by insurance companies. This car was described as category U, meaning undeclared so its a bit of a puzzle as to its story! There is no accident damage apparent but was sold and noted to have a smokey and noisy engine. Worst case it needs a new engine but I suspect it's an injector issue.

Category U - Vehicles that are not owned by an insurance company and may have sustained accident damage. The vehicle is not governed by ABI categorisation guidelines and is unlikely to have been reported to the Motor Insurance Anti-Fraud Theft Register (MIAFTR). Checked registers and no record against the car.

Maybe somebody here recognises or knows the car? Its been sitting on the drive for the last three weeks as I finish off another project but want to get started on sorting the FL2 out.

So as to the car itself. It started fine.....after I got the battery charged and initially the 'smoke' did not look too bad. Thirty seconds later it was generating a lovely smokescreen across the whole neighbourhood Embarassed It's definitely blue/grey smoke indicative of unburnt diesel. It has an obvious clacking noise from the engine and has the shakes while at idle. I still have my fingers crossed that replacement injectors would sort this out. Coolant is clear and oil looks great (for a diesel). Other than the smoke/noisy engine the other obvious faults are the drivers door and drivers rear door do not lock with central locking. Body work is not bad at all, the usual scape/scratch marks around the bumpers and there is some strange spots of lacquer coat peel on the roof. Copart store cars on racks and its possible that the car above was leaking brake fluid which would explain the damage. It also has the screechy air inlet valve suggesting that's kaput! I have not driven it yet....except to drive it off the trailer so no idea what other issues await....I still don't have the V5 document yet so this is still strictly an “off road vehicle” at present. Other than a quick wash I've done nothing else to it so far....not even looked underneath

Anyway thought I would post my progress here getting the car back up and running and hope that I'll be able to pick your brains in resolving the problems that crop up. It may prove entertaining for some!

Today I got my scanner connected and pulled off the following error codes. Makes for interesting reading NOT!:

P0380 – Glow Plug Circuit A

Looking at the list of BUS errors your scanner has detected, and the condition of the interior from your photos, I would suspect that it's been submerged in rather a lot of water for a period of time.

I would initially suggest biting the bullet and finding someone with a cracked copy of SDD to drill down into those codes further....it might mean an awful lot of wiring and modules needing replacing. Then again, it might not. Glass half full and all that 👍🏻

Thanks for the reply. No it has not been flooded.....at least not recently. Just that the interior is filthy, a lot of mud which I've wiped off to a degree but it needs a good deep steam clean. Suggests car may have been used a round a farm or something Wink Everything bone dry, no mold or smell

Give the battery a good charge and clear the codes. Most of them are probably down to low battery voltage due to it sitting around. Thumbs Up

I suspect (hope Smile ) your right! Battery is fully charged now. I did not clear anything yet....just wanted to note all codes stored as a first step. Next step clear codes and check again Thumbs Up

Good idea! There is a garage sticker on the windscreen as well. Was going to give them a ring and see if they have any info. Would be good to know if they have any service history....as car came with nothing.

Yep that's correct....and at that time a new battery was fitted as whoever did it kindly wrote the date on the battery. As mentioned the oil looks partially clear which for a diesel engine does suggest it has recently been serviced. What would be good to know is if the timing belt had been done.....as its coming up for 10years old it will be due.

Indeed! The car will have been sitting at Copart for at least a couple of months I would guess as battery totally flat (but new) and key fob battery also dead. Used an Ebay key fob refurbishment service who put all the original key internals into a new case with new battery (old one was following apart), only one key with car. Remote locking now works.....except for drivers side doors as the lock motors are toast as reported in the fault codes....new lock units will need to be fitted.

My vehicle is coming up to 10yrs and 118Kmls.
So I went to a dealer, Listers, and asked if they had any service history on my vehicle ???
They said NO, unless it was serviced by them.
My turn to say NO, told them they should be able to look at ALL LR dealers history on my vehicle.
Again they said NO.

Banging Head Banging Head

I then asked for a quote to change Belt/Tensioner/Water Pump.
NO Sir , I can only quote for the belt. your vehicle does not need the Tensioner/WaterPump changed.

Banging Head Banging Head Banging Head Banging Head

Good Bye Listers !!

Why do dealers do that ??

.

good luck Gary, hope you didn't pay too much for the car . . . like someone earlier said about flooding and you said it didn't smell damp, maybe its still worth checking the dvla site with the vin number to see where in the country the last MOT was, this 'may' give you a UK region to do a weather check for perhaps xmas period (ie between November to March) 2017 SEAT Ateca 4drive 2.0 xcellence (May 2022 -
2007 HSE with HST bodykit in Zermatt Silver 169,700 miles (dec 2016 - May 2022 )
2007 Honda Civic Type S GT (2012-2017)
2002 Mini Cooper S (2008-2012)
1992 Honda Legend 3.2i (2003-2008)
1990 Honda Concerto (1999-2003)
1985 Honda Accord (1997-1999)
