Never been a BMW fan but my daughter has just bought a 18 plate X3 M sport 2l diesel and it is a cracker. Seating position didn't seem low, smooth through the gears, loads of room and more toys than you can shake a stick at. Only downside is the 5 year super tax on cars with an initial cost of £ 40k or more but I guess any new 4x4 LR is in that category too. All in all something to think about when the time comes. Whistle MY 09 GS manual in Lago Grey, Wood Co arm rest and side bumper strips - now sold.

Quite a lot of LRs still under the £40k limit, some deliberately priced just below (eg DS Landmark). Burt something to watch if buying a well-specced model secondhand! Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone
300TDi Disco (bought new - terrible car) sent back after 18 months
Freelander 1 Estate - leased, given back at end of lease
200TDi Disco (bought from a mate with 100,000 on the clock) - Gone
Disco 2 TD5 - sold and exported to France
FR2 TD4 GS - Gone
FR2 SD4 HSE - Now changed for a DS
New model ex-demo Evoque S 180 in white
Unable to order a new DS, so gave up. Now have a Volvo S90 Recharge.

Haven't looked at prices for some time - I seem to remember that the majority were over £40k whereas a lot, as you say, are under even when you spec metallic, spare wheel, auto and se tech . Have prices come down??

Also notice that LR has disappeared from the likes of drivethedeal and Broadspeed although Carwow still lists them. Hopefully the revamped model later this year will have cured some of the gremlins viz a viz oil dilution problems. MY 09 GS manual in Lago Grey, Wood Co arm rest and side bumper strips - now sold.

Don't hold your breath re oil dilution, but it does seem that they have improved the reliability of the latest models. The DS Landmark is basically a HSE less a few options, deliberately priced within the lower tax brand (just). No-one knows what the new model prices will be. At present LR aren't accepting orders for non-standard build models, apparently. They are trying to clear production before they start selling the new ones. There could be some bargains around soon.
I've heard they will start building in June and selling in August. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone

Just been talking to my neighbour with the 6 month old DS that has had the oil dilution problem and engine out for new balance shafts. If the FL2 rear diff bearing is anything to go by I can't see LR fixing these issues in he short term. Unless they produce a reasonably priced petrol version I am out. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto
5 x FL2 4 manual + 1 auto

Depends on whether the "facelifted" version is built on the same floorpan that is the root cause of the problem in terms of layout of the SCRF, or whether it migrates to the new PTA layout. I'd like to think that the facelift is more than cosmetic, but who knows?

Regarding building, they generally introduce these models after summer shutdown at Halewood, i.e. September, with a view to going on sale from mid-October. At least, if the FL2 13MY and Ewok mkII were anything to go by. When I was up there three weeks ago, they were at full-tilt and new Evoque's far outnumbered the DS driving off the final line.

I had a test drive in the new Honda CRV hybrid a day or two ago.

I must say I was impressed by the way they have managed to integrate the electric motor and 2.0l petrol engine without the use of a CVT gearbox (which in other cars tends to let revs flare and make an unpleasant noise). In fact in the Honda there is no gearbox at all …. Just a 1:1 direct connection between petrol engine and drive wheels at motorway speeds

At lower speeds the petrol engine only drives a generator which powers an 182BHP electric motor that can deliver full torque from the lowest speeds. See attached graphic.

It was very quiet and very comfortable with just as much space as a DS. Said to reliably deliver close to 45 to 50mpg too on regular unleaded, and that seems to be supported by a few road tests I’ve read.

Perhaps hybrids are the future?
