And this leads back to the:
1. Possible wrong timing.
2. Injectors fouled up and not spraying correctly.

1. If you changed the timing belt, they may have not properly aligned the position of the crankshaft sprocket. There you may tune the static timing advance.
2. Use an injector cleaner.

My advance was/is OK, but sometimes, on cold starts, the engine would not start right away, as it's supposed to do, but after several more (5-10) cranking revolutions.
The same white smoke, although not in such quantity. Hence the opinion that is un-burnt diesel.

After replacing all glow plugs and using that diesel injector cleaner, the engine starts after no more than 2-3 revolutions, as normal, and not a trace of white smoke anymore, no matter the external temperature.

i wish it was alex but we've checked cam timing and all bang on pefect al the injectors are brandnew bosch and have been back to the diesel specialist and tested encase a faulty one and its all 100% spot on there stumped to:-(

Options are getting a bit thin on the ground now, but from the photo I'm sure you have an incomplete combustion issue on initial start up.

Given what you have said has been done and rechecked my next thought is, is it a software issue? I think I'm correct in saying , like most common rail engines there are at least 2 stages of injection on our engines, sometimes in other engines there are more stages of injection (Pre, main and Post ignition etc) If the engines ECU is fueling at the wrong time or incorrect duration for conditions then its not going to burn it all properly. Could even be a sensor feeding the ECU duff info.

Have you changed the cam position sensor ? I believe it's only required on start up and the engine then relies on the crank sensor once running and the ecu ignores the cam sensor live input data once running. This was the issue with my Son's TD4 causing poor cold starting.

no did make sure it was set up but will look at changing would it not bring up a fault code?
was going to take egr blank of to encase as egr is new and all good but encase that is a problem but think u are right it combustion so a timing thing

Didn't throw up any DTC's on my son's car until about the 5th time LR assist came out to it, then it was showing a count of something like 228 times which I think is the maximum it can store.

did you sort out the oxygen sensors, as you said they were 88 degrees when cold which am sure would cause problems when starting.

Waiting for it to arrive there’s only one sensor and it’s the one by the turbo so changing that and cam sensor see where we go

oxygen sensor done camshaft sensor done no faults and still over fueling on start up

I think you need to be looking at whipping the head off and checking valves/valve guides/stem seals etc... as has beenn mentioned before in this thread, oil or diesel leaking into a pot or valve not seating correctly when cold?

Going software check next just seems to much diesel unburnt to be valve guides but yes is second engine supposed to be 60,000 miler

OK if a different engine, was it the same MY where have the electronics come from? it is possible you have the wrong software for that model year engine, all the engines are similar however tweeks over the years by the manufacturer make them different. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis
