Hi all.

Need to replace my front struts (MY11 SD4 SE). I can go Bilstein B4 or KYB Excel-G. Sadly these are simply OE replacements - I'd really prefer Tough Dog or B6/monotube. Oh well.

I will do the struts, then add springs for a little extra height, nothing silly.

Any opinions re KYB or Bils? I'm guessing there's nothing in it.

Always used KYB Excel-G on my other cars and always been very happy. Just put 2 rears into the Freelander and still a happy bunny.

I think most FL2s here in the UK dont have a hard life, suspension wise, so struts dont need replacing often. Jules

Does anyone remember in the old days when you would have a "gas struts" sticker on your boot lid? It was probably next to the one that said "discs" 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Having KYB's fitted all round next week. I'll report back once I've had the opportunity to do a few miles on them.

I am at ~116,000 mile for my LR2 and I am not planning to change the shocks unless they start leaking.

In general I tend to use Bilstein shocks and struts.

I did install Koni sports on the rear of my Wife's BMW, because the stock comfort shocks destroyed the handling of that car.


For the LR2 the suspension is long travel (as compared to a typical sedan) and the shocks and struts are low pressure gas.

The combination of these factors results in a softer but still well damped ride as the shocks\struts wear.

I actually prefer my worn suspension to the new suspension from 10 years ago.

If you do decide to change yours please let us know what you think of the new parts.
