England 2011 Freelander 2 TD4 XS Auto Bali Blue
Thinking of returning

Hi all

I normally lurk over on the RRS forum, but joined this forum years ago as Mrs Jim used to own a 2011 XS SD4.

Presently I drive a 2017 L494, but due to worrying issues such as breaking crankshafts, oil dilution, government hatred of big diesel engines and just reliability issues, couple with me working overseas for 6 months every year I am really justifying buying another “Big” Range Rover.

We ran our Freelander for 3 years and it never missed a beat. We did a Land Rover experience day in one (Luton Hoo) and we were really impressed when it managed a rock climb that had defeated the Defender in front of us.

So I am now thinking of replacing my Sport with a Freelander, as there will be less depreciation, it will be easier to work on, it will be cheaper to insure and I won’t have to worry as much about where I park it.

I just wondered what folk here think is the best year model from 2011? I believe that it was discontinued in 2014? What year was the front end facelifted with the DRL’s?

Thanks

Can anyone please remind me of the difference between the TD4 and SD4?

SD4 : More BHP (190) , similar torque (420Nm). Only comes with 6 speed torque converter automatic gearbox, and has no Stop/Start technology. Probably the best Freelander ever made. Jules

The technical differences can be obtained in a specification search. However there are pros & cons in the driving experience. The Sd4 is a fantastic long distance cruiser and great for towing, with lively powerful performance, and excellent fuel economy. I also like goodies like memory seats. But there is a downside driving around town and in heavy traffic; the accelerator and low gears are too responsive and it's difficult to drive smoothly at low speeds unless using the lightest of foot pressure. For this reason I have to select manual; such that the gears never drop into first and so all town driving starts in 2nd, this makes for a more relaxed drive in slow moving traffic. Once on the open road, I change back to auto.
Also written about many times on this site is a turbo lag; usually pulling out into traffic or other awkward times; there's a 2 second lag of NO power. It's unpredictable and infrequent and can't be allowed for and scary. The natural reaction is to accelerate harder and then when it does kick in, you lurch forward like a kangaroo! This my fourth FL and 7th LR and definitely the quirkiest.

Ahhh yes. Was the TD4 150bhp and the SD4 190bhp?

Guys what year was keyless start introduced? Was keyless entry ever an option?

yes 150 vs 190

I dont think keyless was ever an option for FL2.
Who'd want it anyway unless you want your car even easier to steal.
I've got keyless on our Fiesta and personally its not worth the extra things you have to do to overcome the security risk. You still have to press a button to lock the car - its just on the door handle rather than on the fob. Jules

Hi Paul

Turbo lag sadly appears to be a feature of all Land Rover vehicles.

Has anyone on the forum had their engine remapped to solve the problem?

The “turbo lag” that some people complain about is not turbo lag but the “neutral functioning” function of the gearbox. This is activated below about 35kph so if you coast into a roundabout and decide to zip into a hole then there is a momentary lapse as the gearbox selects drive. If you want to control this then you simply select “sport” mode which cancels the neutral functioning feature. Same applies at standstill you can either apply EHB or select sport, both neutralise this feature. MY15

My 14 reg SD4 auto XS is by far the best out of the five FL2s we have had in the family. Can't really fault it and I have never experienced any turbo lag. Ran up to Heathrow this week (120 miles each way up the M3) and got just over 40mpg on the screen. It seems to have a slightly different ride to our earlier models as if there are some suspension changes in the last year of production and I wonder how much of it is identical to an early Evoque ? 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

The one where no key is inserted to start and release the steering lock is the one you want. Even the lowly GS has nice full leather. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

I’d go for a Metropolis, everything you need and more on it. A mini Range Rover. I’ve had the TD4 160, 150 and SD4, the latter would be my pick.

I’ve toyed with the idea of a Fl2 to sit alongside the Velar, for use on dog carrying duties. Or for when the Velar is in at the dealers Rolling Eyes

The D240 in my Velar has the hesitation by the bucket load, the worst out of all the autos I’ve had.

Mauritius Blue, the best colour they done. This was my last 13MY Fl2 XS TD4 manual, chopped my Evoque in for it.
