The glow plugs should carry on working for a while after the engine has started. Is it possible to get a multimeter on the live wire to the glow plugs see if its getting a voltage, and if not track back until you do. Bit of painful way to do it with glow plugs though.

I have a similar issue. New glow plugs. New battery. Glow plugs light no longer shines. Lunchtime I am fitting a 3rd earth lead. |

Update, car is finally starting like new, it wasn't the battery, it wasn't the glow plugs, it wasn't the earth lead. A new denso starter motor has transformed things Perhaps not a big surprise as the original starter has covered 191,000 miles. With hindsight the starter motor has been getting gradually slower for the last 3 years !
