The glow plugs should carry on working for a while after the engine has started. Is it possible to get a multimeter on the live wire to the glow plugs see if its getting a voltage, and if not track back until you do. Bit of painful way to do it with glow plugs though.

Keep us updated please.

I suspect my landy has a similar fault- it's becoming increasingly difficult to start in cold weather (and then splutters to life with unstable revs for a bit), and the battery is just 2 months old. I've never seen the glow plug light come on, and there's nil delay when starting even below 0c. I fear if it gets much colder it won't start at all.

I have access to SDD - is there something specific I should look for with it? Cheers Smile

We have an apartment in ski resort. 1.6km altitude.
It was -8c yesterday.

Will be -20c regularly.

This is kind of important for us to fix.

Will keep you posted but it will be after Christmas now.

John

I have a similar issue. New glow plugs. New battery. Glow plugs light no longer shines. Lunchtime I am fitting a 3rd earth lead.

Update, car is finally starting like new, it wasn't the battery, it wasn't the glow plugs, it wasn't the earth lead. A new denso starter motor has transformed things Very Happy Very Happy Perhaps not a big surprise as the original starter has covered 191,000 miles. With hindsight the starter motor has been getting gradually slower for the last 3 years !

A final point, the speedo/rev counter and all dash lights weren't working after the starter motor had been changed. Thanks to Freel2 this was quickly fixed by disconnecting the battery earth leads for 60 seconds.
