Never heard of that brand before so I wouldn’t probably consider it. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

FWIW, I have a Halfords trade card and was looking in store yesterday. The only 5w30 C1 oil they had was their own brand and 6 litres was £54 (less my discount). Joe public could probably get a named brand for that money. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

There are few more expensive places to buy parts and consumables than Halfords. I only use it as a last resort. Find a local independent motor factor and you'll get a far better deal. Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

I am a bit confused.
In castro oil there are c1 c2 a5 oils in 5w30 fully synthetic etc..and for Ford engines it is A5 so is there any difference between these castro oils as they are all 5w30 fully synthetic?

My local Halfords has started to stock the 934-B oil as from this week, so it should be with you very soon. I think it's £15 for a 2 litre container, and it comes in a fluorescent green colour container which should make it easy to spot!!

It’s £18 for two litres so £54 to change the oil. Too expensive for own brand oil. You can get 6 litres of Granville C1 oil for less than £30.

This is a laymans definition of. Oil Classification as I understand it.

European Standard for car engine oils

For European vehicles sold in the US, there is a further set of criteria, the ACEA classification. Some oil manufacturers include ACEA classification on their oils in addition to the SAE viscosity classification. Modern engines have very tight tolerances and it's essential that the recommended grade of oil is used, especially with European vehicles. When the correct specification oil cannot be found, it should be purchased directly from the vehicle manufacturers to avoid the possibility of engine failure.

The codes look like this:
A: petrol engines

B: diesel engines of cars, light commercial vehicles

A1, B1: standard quality, normal intervals, but: *HTHS-viscosity lowered

A2, B2: standard quality, normal drain intervals

A3, B3: high performance oil, extended intervals are possible

A4: (reserved for vehicles with petrol direct-injection)

B4: similar to B3, but also for diesel direct-injection engines

A5, B5: similar to A3 or B4, but: HTHS-viscosity lowered

The A refers to petrol and the B to diesel engines. Some oil manufacturers include ACEA classification on their oils in addition to the SAE viscosity classification.

*High-Temperature-High-Shear-viscosity

C: petrol and diesel engines with exhaust after treatment

C1: is suitable for catalytic converter an diesel with particulate filter (DPF), low saps & fuel economy, HTHS viscosity is lowered

C2: is suitable for catalytic converter an diesel with particulate filter (DPF), mid saps & fuel economy, HTHS viscosity lowered

C3: is suitable for catalytic converter an diesel with particulate filter (DPF), mid saps

C4: is suitable for catalytic converter an diesel with particulate filter (DPF), low saps

E: diesel engines of heavy commercial vehicles

The value stands for different performance categories:

E2: normal use, normal drain intervals

E3: heavy use, longer drain intervals possible

E4: very heavy use, longer drain intervals possible

E5: similar to E3; also tested for American engines

E6: similar to E4, yet low ash, suitable for DPF and other exhaust systems

E7: similar to E5 yet stricter test criteria

E9: new specification

@yorky bob: I tried to enter the car reg into castro oil website and others, castro says it can't determined refered to dealer. I looked up on owner handbook it states that with dpf engine oil is Ford 934B, without dpf or petrol it's 913B.
Yet quite a few oil selection websites when I entered my car reg it returned castro A5 for stop-start car, neglecting the pdf requirements.

@aj918: thank for the info. I am curious about the code A for petrol and B for diesel. As the above oil selection they directed me to buy castro A5 even knowing that my car is diesel.

My guess is the oil companies place stop-start engine feature more important? than pdf regeneration but from now on I'd ask 934B oil when engine needs oii change.

Thank you all 😀

Ya need to be very careful of c1 spec oils as some are still only rated as Mid saps !
My company in their bean counter mode supplied C1 oil for my Mercedes and the DPF was 82% full in 6 weeks after oil changed, and that was because the cheaper C1 oil which stated was for Mercedes diesel was actually only suitably rated at as Mid saps.

As soon as we flushed it and used the correct spec oil and carried out forced regen it was perfect until they did it again at the next service with the same oil yet again. cost a fortune.

I have photos of the oil bottle and its C1 5/30 and when you read the small printed rated as mid saps Jaguar x-type sport gone

The oil from Yorky Bob link here is c1 Miller oil, specifies : the unique low SAPS formulation so it should be OK. On the other hand I have used the A5 in the last oil change with 9500 miles since and I haven't had any problems with the DPF.

Never heard of Mercedes specifying C1 oil - what engine was that for?

The current norm for Mercs is C3. The only mfrs. I've come across specifying C1, apart from L/R are Ford Volvo & Mazda

This was said tounge in cheek as Castrol say only a dealership has the correct Castrol oil. It’s Censored taking by both companies at the highest level. I have had the Millers oil in now for a number of oil changes and the car runs sweet on it. It’s my last word on this as it’s now going around in circles Yawn FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

Give these guys a bell for first class advice www.opieoils.co.uk don’t bother with the likes of eurocarparts etc. As Yorky Bob said if you have a DPF Millers 5w30 C1 long life is perfect for your car.
