Pretty much - 2 years, 80 mpg over 20k miles now and will be visiting dealer in September for 2nd time to get it serviced again

I would normally change about now when I owned LRs but I've still got 3 years full warranty, 3rd service included and zero problems so will keep it another year at least - maybe 2 and change before 4th service

My mate got a mitsu phev , it was an abject disaster, left him stranded at road side about 7 times,randomly slipping into un-wakeable sleep mode. Spent months at the dealers, he was offered chance to buy it at end of 2 year lease, so he crossed the road and bought a used insignia instead,
He does long journeys to different factories with no charger at destinations so never really gained from the hybrid and got appalling economy figures. that was expected but he bought it for tax breaks, you dont get to pay much tax if you get fired for being late to meetings. At work

Sorry to hear of your health issues though (I read some of the other forums too - RRSport in this case)

I am very tempted by a PHEV - would be ideal for me having a short commute to work and space on the drive to park/charge. Biggest problem I have is it just isn't a LR, love my Freelander too much to want to change it at present.

I think that the Outlander PHEV is a car really worth considering in the future, when you grow tired of looking for decent examples of the FL2.

It is of similar size to the FL2 and has an all weather 4x4 capability, although not perhaps in extreme off road conditions, or that of towing on uneven land. The stiffer suspension and inability to get all of its torque to a driven wheel work against it.

Mitsubishi have developed a unique drive chain, and having listened to the wish lists of it's customers (forums) over time developed most of the features and changes desired.

The latest model has a larger engine/generator which should lower the noise levels by being less stressed when called into play.
Also it now comes with nearly every accessory you ever dreamed of, and much better control over its electric transmission.

My old man has a Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV commercial, I’m not a fan. In the winter the electric range was pants and the petrol engine gutsy. Chances are though I’ll stick with pure diesel, no matter what those on the anti diesel bandwagon say. 21MY Defender 90 S 3.0 D200

Just had an invite to a Mitsubishi event where they will launch the Shogun Sport (pity that in the same literature they spelt it wrong too as Showgun) not sure I will go as not ready to replace the FL2 but I will request some brochures. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

As Ian says MY19 is getting some upgrades 2.4l engine from 2.0l and bigger batteries/motors but not enough to temp me to change with 3 years left of warranty on mine

Next gen Mitsubishi claim 75 miles battery so I'm hoping it's available when I come to end of my warranty then I'll be tempted

The PHEV still draws my interest - though after a weekend in the caravan I fear the hybrid might have a challenge to match how well the Freelander tows.

Towing limit is only 1500 kg so I agree Mitsy has it's limitations but they're increasing engine to 2.4 litre this year which may help and I know people white happily already

Also only aware of Petrol PHEV from LR - DS was supposed to get a 3 cylinder diesel MHEV but read they're having issues - no surprise there as they're still trying to build a decent DS after 3-4 years

With the Outlander PHEV, you must remember that the each axle is driven electrically by an 80 bhp electric motor. (Directly no torque converter or gearbox)
Therefore if you loose traction on one axle (think cross axle situation), the maximum from the other is the amount of torque from ONE motor. This is not as frequently said the theoretical infinite torque at zero revs as this would need an infinite current to be drawn from the battery/generator.

On the PHEV forum website is a clip showing a Outlander PHEV failing to drag a boat out of the water on a relatively flat but uneven slipway. One front wheel drops into a pothole and spins and the rear axle has not enough torque to pull the boat.


Otherwise, the opinion on the forum seemed to say that the PHEV towed successfully as long as you kept up some reserve in the battery, by using the engine/generator to maintain charge FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

PHEV has button to lock motors (acts like diff lock) and Super All Wheel Control so if used properly should work - I have seen videos of FFRR unable to move on flat grass field - it's all about correct use of equipment

The 4 wheel drive button on a PHEV is not a diff lock. It purely keeps both motors (axles) engaged. The differential is free in both cases and relies on Mitsubishi's "Terrain Control" equivalent to brake spinning wheels. There is no into axle connection and the maximum power to each axle is limited to 80 bhp from generator and battery. (or just 40 bhp on battery power along)

Unlike the FL2 it has no gearing or torque multiplication (or axle articulation) to get you of sticky situations.

I will look on the PHEV Forum to see if I can find the clip and the thread. I believe a normal 4X4 is used to rescue the situation, but will check my facts.
