18" rims 255/60 R18 Pirelli Scorpion A/T Plus

For those of us unfortunate enough to have pointless 18 inch "poodle" sized rims on our Freelander, you can fit 255/60 R18 tyres to recover a little dignity! The all important gap between the rear tyre & strut is 4.4 mm!

The tyre installers didn't want to do the first tyre. Told them to do one of the rear wheels! Here are a few photos.

Would need your four wheel alignment spot on there Smile

Is there not danger of contact with the suspension, if the car was heavily loaded or towing? Not sure I'd be comfortable knowing what little clearance there is. Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

The bottom of the spring does not get any closer to the tyre.

I had a wheel alignment done but the previous tyres wore down very evenly, less than 0.5 mm on the inside of the tyre on a couple of them. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

255. Hm. Flamin wide. When did you fit them? Dare I ask price?

I'm still tossing up 17 inch or live with the 18s

Great move Lightwater!
As posted before I have the exact same size and brand on mine and have never had any problem. Just back from a long weekend towing the off-road caravan and the only change noted is slightly lower revs because of the higher gearing. I think the speedometer reading is now almost exactly on GPS (true) speed.
Never had any problem with chafing while steering or going through deepish axle twisters. The ride is definitely smoother compared to the "55" profiles I had on before with the standard 19 inch wheels.
Oh, and of course there is the peace of mind just to know the rims are higher off the ground when encountering stones and rocks.
All and all a move that worked for me so much that the same tyres are planned for the wife's FL2 too!
SA regards.

$295 a corner, unfortunately I have 6 corners! But can rotate tyres in pairs. $100 off the first 4 plus wheel alignment, $1745 all up at BJTM!

Got the car serviced by my independent mechanic as usual, then got the tyres done as the originals were eaten by "rats" on our outback roads!

So now I have a car lift for free! Had to crawl under the car the day before the new tyres to retrieve something. Was under the car again, either I have lost weight in a few days or the car is definitely higher. That's the technical measurement! Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

I cleaned out the wheel well looking for every last mm to reduce the hight of the spare tyre. I cut the carpet away from the hight spots, only leaving the air compressor hoses. I tried the height without the hoses & there is no reduction of height of the spare tyre, whether inflated or flat.

Tank removed for draining, about 60 seconds to disconnect air hoses & electrical plugs.

Carpet cut out & compressor reinstalled

Jack just fits in beside the tyre as the 3rd compressor & 4 litre air tank take up the bulk of the space under the spare.

I massaged up the height of the 2 boot floor brackets a touch.

Temporary packing 6 mm.

With the boot carpet removed on the high spots the 255 tyre sticks up about 5mm. I tried deflating the tyre & whether at 5 PSI or 45 PSI (90 seconds to pump up from 5 to 45 PSI) it is within 1 mm of the same width of 263 mm. So one may as well keep tyre inflated.

Just noticed that these tyres have M&S on the side so they maybe ok for your winter requirements in the UK.

P.S. Just a brief note driving the car with the new tyres. I can't quite describe what it is but the car does feel a smidgen better stability wise on the new tyres. But it could be simply new tyres!

Now I have the same size of tyre as the stock standard Disco size, on a lot lighter car! Just have to look at other ways to lift the car on the move!

Fridge still just fits in under boot cover.

It's a pain having the spare inside or under. It takes space that could be used for things like bigger fuel tanks. It's also horrible when you are up to your eyeballs in mud and have to change a tyre. The spare for an off road car should be on the back tailgate so it's easily accessible and you don't have to unload everything into the crap to get to it. I hope the new Defender replacement doesn't have it inside, although all the other new Land Rovers do now.
It's amazing what a difference the slightly bigger tyres make to off road ability.

My first car, a Peugeot 504 had the spare underneath, even though it wasn't too difficult to get out, on level ground, & I also had air shock absorbers & onboard compressor to raise the car about 50 mm for extra clearance, I do find it easier to get the spare out of the boot even though one has to clear the car first.

Having said that it is not too difficult getting a spare on or off the roof, it is more of an issue of getting your balance & timing right rather than strength. Wear a hat & use your head as thirty point of balance. & never letting a tyre bounce on the ground.

Over here (UK) the spares get stolen off the back door. It also adds a lot of weight to the door, so if side opening you need extra strength built in, and if hinges are at the top of the door you need a swing-out gantry arrangement for the spare, like Merc used to fit.
Bigger problem with the DS is that it's normally supplied over here without a spare, and no space to put one. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone
300TDi Disco (bought new - terrible car) sent back after 18 months
Freelander 1 Estate - leased, given back at end of lease
200TDi Disco (bought from a mate with 100,000 on the clock) - Gone
Disco 2 TD5 - sold and exported to France
FR2 TD4 GS - Gone
FR2 SD4 HSE - Now changed for a DS
New model ex-demo Evoque S 180 in white
Unable to order a new DS, so gave up. Now have a Volvo S90 Recharge.
