For those of us unfortunate enough to have pointless 18 inch "poodle" sized rims on our Freelander, you can fit 255/60 R18 tyres to recover a little dignity! The all important gap between the rear tyre & strut is 4.4 mm!

The bottom of the spring does not get any closer to the tyre.

$295 a corner, unfortunately I have 6 corners! But can rotate tyres in pairs. $100 off the first 4 plus wheel alignment, $1745 all up at BJTM!

That's a good price, did you get more of a discount for six😁 (Now Sold). 2008 Freelander 2 (Nazca Sand) SE TD4 Auto. Statutory write off & on WOVR for hail damage but still road legal.

I cleaned out the wheel well looking for every last mm to reduce the hight of the spare tyre. I cut the carpet away from the hight spots, only leaving the air compressor hoses. I tried the height without the hoses & there is no reduction of height of the spare tyre, whether inflated or flat.
Tank removed for draining, about 60 seconds to disconnect air hoses & electrical plugs.
Carpet cut out & compressor reinstalled
Jack just fits in beside the tyre as the 3rd compressor & 4 litre air tank take up the bulk of the space under the spare.
I massaged up the height of the 2 boot floor brackets a touch.
Temporary packing 6 mm.
With the boot carpet removed on the high spots the 255 tyre sticks up about 5mm. I tried deflating the tyre & whether at 5 PSI or 45 PSI (90 seconds to pump up from 5 to 45 PSI) it is within 1 mm of the same width of 263 mm. So one may as well keep tyre inflated.
Just noticed that these tyres have M&S on the side so they maybe ok for your winter requirements in the UK. P.S. Just a brief note driving the car with the new tyres. I can't quite describe what it is but the car does feel a smidgen better stability wise on the new tyres. But it could be simply new tyres! Now I have the same size of tyre as the stock standard Disco size, on a lot lighter car! Just have to look at other ways to lift the car on the move! Fridge still just fits in under boot cover.

It's a pain having the spare inside or under. It takes space that could be used for things like bigger fuel tanks. It's also horrible when you are up to your eyeballs in mud and have to change a tyre. The spare for an off road car should be on the back tailgate so it's easily accessible and you don't have to unload everything into the crap to get to it. I hope the new Defender replacement doesn't have it inside, although all the other new Land Rovers do now.

My first car, a Peugeot 504 had the spare underneath, even though it wasn't too difficult to get out, on level ground, & I also had air shock absorbers & onboard compressor to raise the car about 50 mm for extra clearance, I do find it easier to get the spare out of the boot even though one has to clear the car first.

I found the back door was an ideal place to keep the spare on my D2! |

Over here (UK) the spares get stolen off the back door. It also adds a lot of weight to the door, so if side opening you need extra strength built in, and if hinges are at the top of the door you need a swing-out gantry arrangement for the spare, like Merc used to fit.
