I have just replaced my throttle body as it was dead (at least it did not make any sounds), on opening it up the gears seam ok but is it normal for the gearbox to be full of black oil?

Yes. Often full of oil. Mine used to drip constantly before I changed. If you haven't blanked your egr valve yet I would consider that as well.

Not done the EGR on this one yet, did do it on my FL1.
