United Kingdom 2009 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Manual Zermatt Silver
Warning! - Front disc corrosion on low mileage older FL2

FL2 GS MY 2009. Total mileage 42K. I use this car three or four times a week. I’ve done 10,000 miles in the past three years.
MoT is due in Aug 2018 so, having checked last year’s Cert, I took note of ‘Brake disc worn, pitted or scored but not seriously weakened’ for both fronts. Pads were OK.
Sunny weather this July, I decided to replace all discs, pads, springs, handbrake shoe actuators and shoes (handbrake tends to seize if not used daily) – the whole caboodle.
Well, I took off the front discs (probably the original set) and was quite shocked (and ashamed) to see the degree of delamination caused through corrosion.
See pictures.

The only day of this July it rained – that’s where the braking-surface rust came from!

Any way, If you own a somewhat older FL2 which doesn’t do many miles, consider that corrosion rates are likely to be significantly greater than if you’re driving every day and regularly generating heat into those discs to dispel moisture.
Clue! If your handbrake is not biting fully because the shoe actuator is rusted/seized, then it’s possible that you’ve got a similar degree/impact of corrosion on the front wheel discs.
Food for thought/action.

Brake disc corrosion is very common on little used vehicles of any make. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

That is pretty severe though.

I’m in Florida at the minute on holiday and been struck by how little corrosion there is on local cars, obviously due to no road salt , calipers and discs on even older cars look factory fresh. Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

What quality you replace them with matters as well. I am on my third set of rear discs from new (2 sets replaced by 63,000 miles). FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

I bought a 2007 FL2 in 2010 with 17000 miles on the clock. I’ve since added 60000 miles and only just had the brake discs changed and a second set of brake pads fitted. I’ve no idea what the discs looked like when they came off, but I do have a good look around whenever I have the wheels off and that’s twice a year not counting punctures and hadn’t noticed anything as bad as this.

Try looking on the inner disc face. I’ve never seen it on the outer face. Outside can look perfect while the inside is rotten. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto
