Transmission fault - Traction reduced on start up every time

Hello friends,
I am new to Landrover and 4wd.
I have just purchased a 2007 fl2 (manual), it has 131k miles. when i start the engine, it does self checks then beeps transmission fault, traction reduced, i can't select any of the terrain modes either, i have been reading a lot of forums about this and it seems that it is usually down to a faulty haldex unit? but most people say this happens intermittantly or when driving?

one question i have is, could it be a sensor? or even a fuse to the haldex pump? i assume if it cant detect the unit, then it will report a fault? i have plugged a basic generic diagnostic tool and no faults are stored.

I would be grateful for any pointers and checks to carry out before i take it to a garage.

Many thanks Bow down

When you say "on start" I presume you mean every time and that the fault stays while the car's in use (flashing amber light on dashboard). Just worth confirming that you don't mean the fault shows on start up, but then clears.

Anyway assuming't permanent then the fuse is an easy check, not sure how often that's the fault but would be silly not to check. It's FB6 in the fusebox by the spare wheel. You can check the voltage with the fuse fitted, check you're getting voltage on both test points. With a sensitive meter you can also check for current draw by measuring the voltage across the fuse.

Yes that's exactly what mine did, all modules like ABS etc were logging fault that they couldn't contact the Haldex (RDCM in Land Rover speak). However I was checking with a Land Rover specific tester so they may be LR specific codes.

In my case it was a wiring fault, see here for the sorry tale and hopefully eventual fix ... http://www.freel2.com/forum/topic31967-30.html ----------

How's your battery? I had this last year on a dying (only 3 yr old) battery and sure enough, after it died, a replacement made the 'fault' disappear. 6 months later and after a period of doing trips no more than a few miles, it came back. I drove a 20 mile trip to make sure the battery was topped up, no difference. I was just about to go down the haldex route when I had the need to do a 100 mile round trip, and lo and behold, no 'fault' has appeared since.

Thanks for your reply aesmith,
I'm not sure if there is an amber light on the dashboard, i will check tomorrow, but, when i start the engine, "system check" comes on, then it beeps after a few seconds and displays "transmission error, traction reduced", it then goes off from the display, when i switch the engine off, the same message comes back on the display.

Thank you for the info on the fuse, i will also check that tomorrow.

When it displays this error, what does it mean? is it a case of its running only on 2wd? It may seem like a silly question, but i have only just purchased it and not sure about these things.

Many thanks

del1979 as far as i know the battery is ok, i have read this on a lot of American forums about a low battery causing multiple issues, i will put the charger on it for a while then try it again.

Assuming the fault is with the Haldex then that's my understanding - only two wheel drive is available. Also the various special programs and hill descent control won't be available.

If you get the alert on start, but the amber fault light doesn't remain lit, then see whether you can switch the various terrain response programs without error. If it seems like the error clears after the car's started than that would make a battery issue more likely. ----------

Hello Tony,
I have just read through your post with your issues, well done for finding that damaged wire.

Ok, i have tested the fuse and it is ok, the error message comes on when engine starts then goes off, there is not an amber light illuminated on the dash, just the normal lights, i tried setting the terrain response dial but just says "terrain resonse system faulty" I also noticed that is said "special programs off" i did take a video of it but i cant upload to here, but here are some pictures.

EDIT... maybe this link will work to the video? https://1drv.ms/v/s!AsVAaVXELYhKzzS7AlmWBQGjfZQL

Thanks again
Regards Allan

The problem is without a diagnostic reader you could be wasting time and money.
It could very well be the Haldex, but a faulty ABS wheel sensor will also disable the 4 wheel drive and therefore all the special traction functions will be disabled. So you could be looking at the rear of the car and it's the front drivers side ABS sensor wiring has been snagged / ripped out - speaking from bitter experience.

Point is get the codes read, preferably by someone who understands FL2s. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her
Replaced by Ewok what a mistake - now a happy Disco Sport owner

Hi Andy131,
There are no codes stored or pending codes, that is the problem.
I am going to take it to my local LR specialist, hopefully they will have an idea of what the problem is.

Any error messages that appear on the dash will definitively store an error code.
Use a dedicated (LR) diagnostic equipment and you'll see the error(s).
If you use a generic code reader, then those will generally read powertrain errors - meaning engine and gearbox.
Slim chances to see ABS, Haldex, etc. errors...

Thank you
I will be taking it to a LR specialist next week, hopefully they will be able to find some faults.

When you fire it up and get the error message, the amber light on the 4x4 transmission mode selector goes out, yes? Does the message disappear after a time of driving. Does the amber light on the mode selector also come back on, ie the transmission resetting? If so I'd reckon battery issue, new one and second earth strap cured mine.

When kept getting the error message during driving, which would then stay on until restarting the engine, a wiring loom part on the Haldex cured that.

Edited to make the questions a bit more clear.

The message is still there, it appears it goes off, but if you scroll through the pages with the "i" button, you'll find it there.
