Looking for advice

Hi,
we are looking to replace a 2016 CRV in the next 6 months or so. We have been looking at pretty much everything around, new and used. I would be looking for a late run out one ideally.

Are there any inherent issues with the F2? I've had a browse of the forum and they seem to be pretty bullet proof.

Has anyone got any experience of the Discovery Sport? and how they compare to the F2? cheers

Our 2008 FL2 wasn't only bullet proof - it was Andy proof.
OK 185k miles and it had a few issues, the ones that come to mind were a wheel bearing, door locks failed (one by one), transfer box failed at high mileage (>150K), motorised valve in intake failed, and I broke a couple of intercoolers and radiators - then again if you shove sheet ice through them wading it invalidates the warranty.
Avoid the manuals - this doesn't only apply to the FL2, any vehicle that tows a heavy trailer or is used off-road needs to have either a low ratio or be automatic - just my opinion others love the manuals.
As long as you are prepared to get your hands dirty (or find a good LR specialist) they can be fun and cheap to run, but go the official LR dealers and things can get expensive. e.g a door lock is less than £100 and takes maybe an hour, take it to a dealer and you could be looking at £300 or more.

Would I have another - in a heartbeat, but the wife thinks they look old fashioned Censored

We bought a Disco Sport in November, and have only done 14,000 miles in her so far. A worthy replacement for the FL2 in my opinion, better fuel economy, but heavy on the Ad-blue and no-where to fit a spare wheel. Oh and ignore the 21k mile service interval if you intend to keep the car - I am going to change the oil every 10K on ours. Reliability - ask me again in another 150k. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her
Replaced by Ewok what a mistake - now a happy Disco Sport owner

what year is your DS? We would be looking at one of the early ones, i am reading there were a number of build quality issues? cheers

Ours is a 66 plate, so a 2017 model year, ex LR fleet car, bought when a year old with 7k on the clock.

From what I can find out, owners were rejecting cars because of "B pillar rattles", now if that's a reliability issue, then god help the owners if they take one off-road. Me I ran the FL2 on full mud tyres, or descent all terrains (and will the DS one when funds allow), think loud, when the transfer box died I didn't notice until I lost 4 wheel drive, and it must have been howling for weeks previously. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her

It will be used for short journeys 3-10 miles each way, with the occasional monthly run out. Reading a DS forum, it looks like i should be steering clear of the 2.0 diesel engine and be looking at the 2.2 SD4 that was in the final FL2s.

I must admit I am leaning towards the FL2 tbh.. cheers

the 2.2 SD4 is diesel as well. Unless you go for a weekly blast on the motorway you are going to run into dpf issues. Also coming from a CRV I think you will find mpg, servicing and running costs considerably more than what you are used to. Personally I would stick with a petrol engine which rules the FL2 out - I think the DS has petrol option which I am sure someone else will confirm. FL2's are nice cars (did I just type that???) but when they go wrong (which often they do) it can become expensive.

For your mileage I would certainly look at other manufacturers. Now - 2017 BMW X3 M Sport Carbon Black

I don't think that the FL2 is for you. In that short distance it will be hardly warmed up and your fuel consumption will be terrible.
The FL2 is a supreme long distance cruiser.

So buy an electric car (you don't have to pay much tax on the fuel)

(Or an Outlander PHEV) FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)
FL2 Metropolis SD4 Auto 2014 2017- (16k - 77k+ miles) (MY2015)

We have some large bits and pieces we carry. Fuel consumption isn't too much of an issue. Oh doesn't like the outlander phev, a colleague used to run one and wasn't too impressed. cheers

We had a D2 and currently have a D3, we like the look of them as they don't look like everything else out there. I have a good indy that looks after our older cars.

I must admit i am thinking whether to hang on to the CRV tbh... cheers

I for one would like to see the state of a CRV (or any other mid sized 4x4) after the abuse I gave our FL2.
In 185k miles she didn't get me home twice, once was fuel sender - and that was after a high speed shunt up the rear, and the other time when the motorised valve in the air intake failed - and the AA "fixed" it in 15 minutes.

Mmm 2.0 engine vs the 2.2 engine
Our non-DPF 2.2 auto with 6 speed box was absolutely brilliant - smooth, reliable, but not that economical. Our 2.2 auto with 9 speed Ewok was a complete and utter disaster, nasty to drive, a killer. Our 2.0 with 9 speed DS is as nice as the FL2, smooth, and more economical.
Granted it's 40 miles each way to work and 30 of those are at motorway speeds, with short runs at the weekend, and monthly runs of 100-200 miles. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her

Yes, I had an auto HSE for 5 years, great car and I liked it a lot. I now have a DS, a very early car with the 2.2 SD4 engine and normal size tank as no SCR stuff. As much as I loved my FL2, I have to admit the DS is quite an improvement to drive. Its quiet and refined, comfortable even on 19"'s and very well thought out design wise.

It makes the FL2 feel a tad dated in my opinion, but that is not meant as a criticism as I still like the way the FL2 drives. When I first got it I thought I had made a mistake as I struggled to get used to the ride height and lower roofline making it appear smaller, but once I found the seat sweet spot in reality its not that far off the FL2. Funnily enough it reminds me in a lot of ways like the Jaguar XF I had which is no huge surprise I guess. Better built than the XF as well but that's another story.

Its been no trouble other than some 'Land Rovery stuff' like occasionally the park camera does not activate and the odd rattle from the passenger door but I am not bothered as its intermittent and hardly mission critical. My Freelander also used to spit the key on the floor sometimes if if did not want to start and sometimes it made funny noises for a bit then stopped Smile

If you look on the DS Sport forums no one would ever buy one, but in reality you need to look into the posts in more detail and make your own mind up if thinking of buying one. There are several disgruntled owners who post a lot even after they have sold their DS's who have had issues that were important to them and indeed that is their prerogative.

Regarding the CRV I did look at one and have driven them in the past. I find the fit and finish very good and the CRV is a fine car, its just that the DS seems to have a bit more character if that makes sense.

why not go to a Land Rover dealer and test drive a Metropolis or HSE and a Discovery Sport HSE and judge for yourself? Smile
