England 2013 Freelander 2 SD4 HSE Auto Santorini Black
New mot rules headlight washers

With ref to above,the really interesting one is the headlight washers.How many testing stations are aware of the(let's say odd way in which they seem to have been designed by Lr.)
Has anyone so far(I know it's early days)had their fl2 failed due to the ignorance of the testing station,and,how did they sort it out? To get a pass ticket? gone
P38 v8 auto no problems,great howle from exhausts when giving it welly
Td5 auto head gasket,no5 pot not uncommon but good car.
1st Tdv6s manual epb problem fixed under warranty(stealer said"never heard of this before,i suggested he looked at d3 forum.
2nd Tdv6 se auto epb
3rd Tdv6 xs auto 2008,swmbo,s favourite.

I had a problem with a Disco 1 that failed because the ABS light did not go out when the engine was started. On the D1 it is supposed to go out when your reach 5mph and then stay out. I showed the tester the handbook which explained this and he agreed that he had got it wrong. As it also failed on a steering joint it had to be re-tested for that after repair so it passed. That suited me at the time but as now there is a permanent record of MOTs giving full details that is accessible to anyone it could cause problems. Ideally I should have appealed the failure on the ABS light but that would have been a lot of aggro.

What ignorance of testing stations are you specifically referring to regarding headlamp washers? Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

I think he means that FL2 headlight washers do not work every time the windscreen washer spray works, it is every 5th(?) time and that may make a tester think that they are not working and thus a fail.

Yes to the above.
Steve no disrespect aimed at mot testers,it's just that the land rover has an odd system,and if it's initially
failed on this point,then this is going to show on the printout as mentioned above.i doubt very much that testers are going to have the time to check all the quirks of different makes.no doubt in time they will say,"ah"it's a land rover with the strange washer system.

For what it's worth - my 2007 Jaguar XK has headlamp washers which work exactly the same as the Freelander ones. Could it be that the 'every 5th squirt' pattern is common to other cars - especially Fords of the period?? Currently enjoying:

Ah, I see what you mean. I haven’t come across one yet but under the new testing system, you should get a VSI (Vehicle Specific Information) note come up when registering the vehicle for the test. It should tell you how to check things such as how the headlamp levelling devices, headlamp washers, ABS lights work as well as any common faults that are specific to that vehicle. Whether they will or not will remain to be seen. Next time I test a car with HID's I’ll let you know what came up! Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

I don’t think the testers will get a helper specifically to see if the headlamp washers work in conjunction with every screen wash. More likely they will get out to see if the bumper is wet and more importantly the floor once the excess water has drained off.

Yes, there are a number of cars around nowadays with the same problem at the back - if the brake lights are on, the indicator is not clear. I was behind one this week where the brake light was a ring of LEDs round the indicator and when he slowed on the A road it really wasn’t clear what he was up to until he took his foot off the brake and suddenly turned right. In daylight you just couldn’t see the indicator if the brakes lights were on. 2005 D3 2.7 Auto

It is a legal requirement that the DRL's dim if they are within a certain distance from the indicator ( 40mm I think but can't be bothered to look it up again Smile ) it may well be that there could be similar legislation introduced due to LED lighting being so bright compared to the old tungsten 21w lamps. Manufacturers do seem to be including the brake light inside the indicator light or vice versa instead of the old split of brake, reflector, indicator, again vice versa. Design rules, the old 7" headlight would be brilliant with todays lighting technology, you could see for F Censored ing miles but they have to be squeezed into nacelles with 31/2 inch projectors set back with all sorts of scatter as they become older. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

No problems at all on Tuesday when my 11 year old FL2 passed its MOT with no advisories and a fast pass emissions result of 0.35. Surely most Land Rover independents and franchises will have an MOT tester nearby who they use that would be used to the green ovals odd behaviour.
