Truth be told, this is a car that should been launched around 1972, so what’s another wasted decade?!

A local dealer principle who went abroad to a presentation on other models had a brief glance as it came out of a cloud of smoke and the abiding impression was that it had the spare wheel on the back door it then disappeared as quickly as it came!

The Defender will have been out of production for 5 years! Amazing...

This week's Autocar has an article by Matt Prior --"Replacing the Defender"

Basically he seems to be saying that the Defender, although good in it's time, had become very outdated.
So now, rather than an upgrade or similar design, the new Defender needs to be designed for the present day from a new start.

He compares it with trying to produce a modern design of the original Morgan.

I am sure the article will be available on line soon.

It looks as if the new Defender will no longer maintained and mended with no more tools than a hammer, adjustable spanner, and a GS screwdriver.

PS I am sure that the more practical of you, will remind me that an adjustable spanner is heavy enough to make a good hammer, so even less tools. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

Thanks LR NUT, very interesting read, especially the imminent change to the MLA chassis architecture.

Looking at this I guess that this is why the launch was delayed, and all Defenders will be at least be Hybrid and on the MLA chassis.

As the (tax) laws change I suspect that it will also have a plug in electric hybrid version which will do the necessary 50 miles on the electric charge. --- times change don't they?
