350 miles on a good day, from a full tank? Wouldn't that work out at around 23mpg or so? I'm sure everywhere I've read is that is is higher than that.

My old MY57 TD4 manual on a full tank would have a range of over 500 miles my SD4 Auto MY13 never seen it over 350 miles range if I'm lucky. MY13 HSE LUX Aintree Green

As it has lpg at £0.50 per litre and petrol/diesel at £1.25ish that 20mpg becomes 50  Common sense isn't very common.

I’m on a 59 plate TD4e and normally do 500 miles per tank plus or minus about 40 miles and without running on vapour at fill-up. That’s even with the stop-start only actually having cut in about 6 times in my 7 months of ownership and should get better if we ever get temps above 7C! I’m appalled at the prices advertised for newer models, but relaxed about the probability of it needing some expensive components over the next couple of years - even if I have to replace diff, haldex and clutch, my total investment should still be below £10k, which isn’t bad for a car at this point in the quality range. While the ten-year Service is a big one, apart from the timing belt/water pump, it should all be do-able as a DIY, driveway activity spread over the summer months and the cost of doing a FL2 timing belt is not that much more than on most smaller diesel cars. 2005 D3 2.7 Auto

My regular runs from Essex to South Wales will see 36 +mpg. I beat 40 on one occasion. There are many factors though including Air Con on or off, tyre pressures, speed, weather etc.

Years ago "a friend" would do the run with the cruise control set at 95; that would return less than 25 mpg.

My old Td4 returned 33mpg around town and the best I saw on a run was 47mpg , the Sd4 returns around 30mpg in town and 48mpg on a run . I don't think running costs are too bad for a vehicle of this type , I had a Vw tiguan courtesy car with the Dsg gearbox for 3 weeks and as nice as it was I much prefer the Sd4 .

From a TD4 manual, you'll average 35mpg.

When you buy one, put £1000 in a box under the bed for the first year's servicing and repairs. At the end of the first year - you might have had to borrow from another box...

But never mind - pay back the loan, and put in what's left of another £1000. Keep this pattern up throughout your ownership, and your Freelander will never cost you more than £1000 per year to maintain. When you sell it, you have everything that is left in you box to spend on beer. Currently enjoying:

All 3 of my Fl2s struggled to get the 400 miles, in fact my current Velar with the supposed super duper ingenium engine struggles to get the 400 miles, but can be achieved with careful driving. Made it from Scotland to London on a tank of fuel on the D5 though, total range was 620 miles.

To be honest you buy a LR for the love of it, they ain’t cheap to run, can be troublesome though the Fl2 fairs better than most LRs. If you want a comfortable, and in my experience, well put together and reliable vehicle that gives the full LR experience in a smaller package then it’s the car for you. If you want something economical and cheap to run, look elsewhere. 21MY Defender 90 S 3.0 D200
