Hi, I think that it’s simply a case of when cars are pushing 10 years old you are not buying against a book value , you are buying what the market is willing to pay . The Freelander 2 IMHO is enjoying fairly high residuals as it has a fairly unique place in the market . The overall design wasn’t tweaked too much over the production life , and it has a quite classical LandRover look that many find more appealing than the similar aged alternatives . It’s also a very capable vehicle for those that need it and you will see lots around the Dales, the Pennines etc in places where function beats fashion . I think there are also a few owners disappointed with the trade in values they were offered v what dealers are trying to sell these cars for . I’ve just dropped our car in for service today and the Indy has several excellent FL2 for sale at what I quite frankly describe as obscene prices , but hey , he is selling them no problem .

I would say if the car has not been main dealer and independent Land Rover specialist serviced , don’t touch it .

i would feel bad telling a private owner more realistically what there car is worth, not a tyre kicker but they need to get in real world.

I think thats the sensible way to do that service, I certainly intend replacing all the oils at a much shorter interval than 10 years or 150K miles, likewise the timing belt and water pump.

What do you think an 08 is worth ? The issue is there are some cars out there at 10 years old that are mint , low mileage serviced regardless of cost and would serve you well over the next 5 years , then there are some real dogs that are money pits . Just as a benchmark I took our car into the Indy for a service and a few jobs today , they had 3 clean model year 10/ 11 models at around £13,500 . A month or two back they had an 09 for £12,000 ! Would I buy one at that price ? Not a chance when I bought our 09 GS auto from a main dealer in 2011 I paid £16,500 with 33k miles on the clock . However it does show how sellers may value their cars proportionately to ones on specialists forecourts. Never be afraid to offer what you think a car is worth , all the buyer can do is a) say no , b) counter offer . At the end of the day they are mainly selling the car privately as they want a few quid more than the part ex they have been offerered, and if that’s the case an offer from you might be win win . 2009 GS Auto Zermatt Silver - Sold June 21 after 10 years of ownership 2016 Subaru Outback SE 2.0 diesel SE Premium Lineartronic Sold 2024 after 8 years and 80k miles . Best Car I ever owned ! 2023 Toyota Hilux invincible X 2.8 Auto . |
