Power Steering Leak

Hi guys,

So I have a power steering leak that’s dripping a drop maybe every 1-2 seconds when the cars running. I’ve had a look up in the drivers front wheel arch and I can see where it’s coming from. I’ve circled the area in the picture. Could someone tell me if this is an easy fix I.e. could I do it myself or would it need to go into a garage? Would you also know how much this would cost? Just back from a holiday abroad so bit tight for cash till the end of the month so is there any quick fixes I could do until then? Jubilee clip? Tape?

Any help is appreciated

Thanks guys

No idea if its a nut fitting into the rack or just a clip fitting from that photo.

If its a spanner fitting try it for tightness, if tight and the pipe or clip are at fault you could try butting a extra clip in, just in the short term. Best doing it right though if unable to tighten with a spanner and renew the pipe as the consequences of running out of oil will cost. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

Thanks for your quick reply, I’ll do what you say. Out of curiosity I’ve seen a lot of people on here having to get their steering rack repacked, does this leak here look like I might need that done and if so do you know how much I’m looking at to get this replaced?

Thanks

I suggest you go back to those posts and ask them any specific questions. A lot of early cars only had rack failures due to weld detritus left in on manufacture. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

Just saw this on another post:

The steering problem was down to a blown O-ring where a hose mates with the rack.  FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

Hi There was this problem solved successfully ? if so how please was it a clip loose, an O-ring, or a bolted joint, I am asking as today I started the car travelled about 4 miles when I heard a whining coming from the car as got further down the road the steering became quite hard, right away I thought power steering, once I had pulled into a parking space I lifted the bonnet to find the power steering fluid was at the minimum.

lucky for me an Halfords was only a 5 minutes walk down the road purchase power steering fluid, topped up the fluid drove home 3 miles checked and once again fluid low, I think it is coming from the same place as in the photo's above, I will check tomorrow to make 100% sure but any advise is most welcome thank you.

All sorted, two new pipes both corrosion issues, back to normal.
