I expect this subject may have been covered elsewhere in the superb Forum but I can't spend the next hour or so trolling through all the postings to find a previous similar subject.

Anyway, Scenario is that I can push the start button and you can hear the solenoid clicking but with no turn over of the starter motor. Leave it a while and it might then decide to spring in to action ! However, this is somewhat random and at present it seems that the solenoid has had enough and invariably it won't turn the starter motor over at all ! Grrrrr.

I read on another Forum that there are repair kits available for the solenoids but I have a nasty feeling that they are only for Mk I's as the solenoid is removable from their starters and not (??) from Freelander II's - That's a if that's true !

So, any comments or helpful tips would be extremely gratefully received. I have access to full workshop facilities (if I can persuade the bl88dy car to start so's I can drive it there ) so a repair or replacement wouldn't be too problematical if required.

It is most probably the starter as you yourself suspect although it is worth checking the battery voltage and earth leads just to eliminate any issues with them. There are repair kits available for the Freelander 2 which contain the internal parts of the solenoid. See Ebay item eBay Item No. 292208135663 as an example but there are different ones depending on the starter numbers. Old mechanics trick which might be worth trying is tapping the starter with a hammer which sometimes brought a dead starter back to life for a little while. You only really need it to work once ! I see yours is a 2007 has it got the extra earth connection ?

Being Easter I wish to pontificate, neither can most on here waste hours helping others but they do

Maybe not the starter solenoid clicking but the ignition relay in the under bonnet JB, and something else security wise is stopping it from starting. Does the steering wheel unlock OK, perhaps give it a good thrashing and try it again next time (tapping of the steering lock)

Plus 1 for gently tapping the starter, I fitted the extra earth lead and had the battery tested when mine was playing this game intermittently before remembering the gentle tap trick which worked wonders until I fitted new brushes to the starter.
