Puddle Fun!

Bit of a random one...

Loving splashing through puddles with my FL2 (there's alot of puddles at the mo too Laughing ), but often the water splashes back up straight onto the windscreen and the wipers just aren't quick enough to rid it - there's been a few times I've been momentarily blinded by some big puddles on country lanes, which is not for the faint hearted!

So, I'm thinking the shape of the bumper, etc is causing this and maybe there's nothing I can do, but surely others (particularly off roaders) must get this too and can suggest something?

Like windscreen spoilers? Or similar?

Apologies for what sounds like a really dumb question when you put it in writing! Embarassed

May I suggest that you check to see if you have front "spats" fitted as these are designed to stop exactly what you are experiencing, water being thrown up onto the screen when the front tyres meet a large body of water.
There is also two sizes available, mine are the smaller version.

 MY15
Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)
Surround Camera System
InControl Apps soon to be replaced with CarPlay (WIP)

Digital Broadcast TV
Meridian Rear Media with WIFI
Factory Powered Tailgate

sorry to be a Victor Meldrew but a bit silly to purposely drive through puddles.

best to avoid them where possible.

Not a good idea as water can enter the air filter quite easily on these. It could even destroy an engine if enough got in but some and recent reports on here of air filter being destroyed and then causing running problems as the bits of wet filter gum up the air intake side of the engine. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

Haha just to position- I’m not hunting down puddles!

My point is that in a 4x4, surely my windscreen should not be getting covered in water!

Mustangsally84, i know just what you mean!

Around here the water table is super high, and the roads rather broken so there is often quite a lot of standing water/puddles after even the lightest rain. Certainly to much water to simply 'avoid' even going on to the opposite side of the road.

There's been more than a few occasions recently when a 'puddle' seems to have entirely jumped up and on to the windscreen. I've taken to preemptively putting the wiper on on some roads, speed is definitely a factor in the height of spray. In many cases I think the water is actually being displaced into the kerb then up vertically, that's certainly how it feels.

I put the larger version of the spats on my 07 fl2. It didn’t really make any difference to the amount of water that ended up on the windscreen. Took them off again to fit the alloy sump guard as they don’t fit together. The amount of water on the windscreen is down to a combination of depth and speed along with the huge gap between the tyre and wheel arch.

have you got rain sensor wipers?because mine has and when I go through puddles the wipers are almost instant as the water hits the screen.

Thanks everyone, looks like I’m stuck with it.. will just take it even slower through the flooded lanes! Let’s just hope the poxy rain is on its way out here in the UK!

On another note- even dreamt of off-roading last night!!

If you see a puddle coming - switch on the wipers first!

Just because they have an auto mode you don't have to use it.

To add context!

Now obviously this is not the kind of puddle I was referring to as clearly I'm going slow enough to avoid the water splashing up onto my windscreen, but it might explain why I come across many puddles - you can't avoid them where I live atm!

At times like this I'm so glad I traded in my Audi a3 Smile

If the water is coming up the near side wing in a similar manner I’d be worried about water entering the air inlet which is the triangular grill with the indicator repeater in it. The duct runs inside the wing to the air filter box which does have a drain, but there have been stories of wet collapsed paper air filters clogging the system. Perhaps you need to slow down a bit.

......fit a snorkel (mine is a modified Safari)

You will see I removed the silver vent and fitted a colour toned Blank over the air in-let, cutting out a hole for the seal to the snorkel.
