....... I have used the same Witter towbar (detachable/flanged) on all three (no bodywork removal or cutting - only drill small access hole for a 13mm socket behind LH reflector) - but got it chemically stripped and repainted between 2nd and 3rd vehicles.

By that I hope you mean the same 'STYLE' of towbar .......... NOT the same actual Witter towbar.

I have know Witter towbars to rust away over a 5-6yr period. One member of the Freelander 1 Club actually had it rip away from the bolt-on side cheeks !

Nope, same one. Its in fine fettle and was given several coats of Hammerite prior to original installation (and again prior to current vehicle)- much better than the original thin protective coating which gives way to rust all to easily I agree. Jules

Did he use it to launch boats into the sea ?- that would certainly cause early rust rot Jules

No sure. It was rusting from the inside out.

Painting in Hammerite only hides what is actually happening underneath.

I would not risk it myself.

Each vehicle I have ......... NEW towbar.

Does anyone know if the electrics OEM VPLFT0077 need coding or not? The LR VPLFT0077 is no longer available and this is the only set for the MY2010. -Mark
