United Kingdom 2007 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Manual Buckingham Blue
My first Freelander 2 - problems!

Hi all,

I just brought a used FL2 2007 '56 plate HSE model. The advert looked good, got there and the car had been sitting around for the best part of a year. There was moss around the windows and rims etc. but this all washed off. On the inside, there was/is mould on some of the seats, seat belts and sun visors etc.

Since driving the car home, I've had it cleaned at a car park valet and it looks much better. The moss around the windows has now gone and the Buckingham Blue is shining beautifully.

Some issues I've had since buying:
- "Transmission Fault. Traction Reduced" message on the message center after pulling off.

- Pool of water/liquid under the passenger seat meaning the carpets front and back on the left hand side of the car are all drenched - guessing this was the source of the mould and damp.

- Slight knocking noise after starting the engine and sometimes whilst driving at low revs in low gears (pulling off etc.)

I've contacted Bell Engineering regarding the transmission fault message and I've read in several places about the water - likely culprits: sun roof drain pipe (although headlining doesnt appear to be wet) or the air con drain pipe down in the center console and footwells.
The pool of water under the passenger seat seems to fill the entire void between the carpet and the bottom of the car. Must be 1-2 inches deep.

Thoughts and suggestions?
Thanks 2018 - 2007 '56 manual HSE Freelander 2

I seem to remember something about the air con leaking causing wet carpets.

a/c drain pipe in the middle of the centre console gets blocked sometimes (probably more so if its been sitting for a year and moisture has taken its toll)
I had this on one of my FL and the carpets were waterlogged, steam was coming out the air vents on the dash when set at about 20deg.

simple fix, get down into the footwell, disconnect the pipe and clean with a pipe cleaner or similar, reconnect and it should be ok. then wet vac the carpets and let them dry

I have read somewhere in the forum that the self sealing ends of the drains do clog up with muck over time & it is a matter of cleaning them out with a pipe cleaner of something.

Water leaks can be a pain but do the centre drain and sun roof, dry out and take it from there. A smoke test if you need to do more may work.

Change the AC cab filter and drive with AC on.

Your engine. Get some good quality oil and new oil filter asap. Monitor. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

Thank you all for your replies.

Yes, I did see it as a total bargain - advertised for £4000, got it for slightly less. I did test drive the car before buying and the only issues at the time were "damp" carpet in the passenger footwell, bit of moss around the outside and the engine knocking noise.

Since getting the car home and finding a puddle in the passenger footwell, I've found all of these other issues.

I think the water ingress issue may be the sunroof drain pipe as after some rain last night the left nearside pillar was soaked from the passenger grab handle to half way down the pillar above the dash.

I've slid the passenger seat all the way forward and got down behind the passenger seat and looked under it (where the foot heater goes to the rear passengers - removed this plastic extension) and can see a pool of water which is as deep as my finger (2 inches or so)! Only issue is, this water has run under the 'floor' of the where the rear passengers feet go - not sure if it extends beyond this, I guess it depends on how much of a void there is under the rear seats and how far back that goes.

I'm seriously dreading how much it could cost for a garage to remove any seats and pull up the upholstery 2018 - 2007 '56 manual HSE Freelander 2

I will check the air con drain pipe this weekend but I'm pretty sure its the sunroof drain pipe.. could be both I guess!

I cant wait to sort it all out and have no worries when driving it! I had a pig of a motorbike before which constantly needed work (and still does) so was hoping I could just enjoy my landy! Crying or Very sad 2018 - 2007 '56 manual HSE Freelander 2

When you've fixed the leak try a wet+dry vac to get rid of most of the water then use a de-humidifier to dry it out properly.
A bag of rice is supposed to be good for absorbing damp if no de-humidifier Thumbs Up

Or a bowl of salt, great for absorbing damp/taking moisture out of the air.
Have you also checked in the boot, if that's wet it will most likely be high level brake light. very common Thumbs Up If it wasn't so bad it'd be funny.

Any ideas or guides for pulling up the carpets front and back? I have a lot of water under there and need to get it out and dry it all out.

I imagine its a good days worth of work for a garage Confused 2018 - 2007 '56 manual HSE Freelander 2

As mentioned above, once you’ve fixed the leak, wet&dry vacuum will remove the worst of the water (mine was a £40 vacuum from Wickes and has given excellent service). The rest will dry out in time, quicker as the days warm up and if you do some decent runs with the heating up and the a/c on.

If you are not willing to wait, you could get hold of an electric dehumidifier but you will have to find a way of running it in the car for hours, with the doors and windows shut, otherwise you will just suck moisture from the air outside.

While rice, salt, ground coffee, split peas etc will absorb lots of water, you could fill an FL2 to the roof with these and still have very little impact on a wet carpet! 2005 D3 2.7 Auto

The carpet is in two halves. You say you have water under the seat ........ looks like BOTH halves need to come out.
