1st, 2nd and reverse for 2007 GS as well. You’ll get the wheel display when you engage ggs, mr or sand.

On my 2009 GS it says the HDC is not available in this gear when I'm in second, but it still works!

Yes, dash indicator flashes but HDC works in second on my MY10. 2005 D3 2.7 Auto

Odd that on my 07 GS HDC only works on 1st gear - flashes warning if in second and the + and minus buttons do not work - they must have upgraded that after 07. The important point is that the HDC even in 1st is simply too fast for tricky descents - the gearing is not low enough to restrain the beast at a slow enough speed and the brakes are having to work far too hard. Often when you really need HDC you should be inching down. I would have done without all that electronic doh- dah for low range cogs.

Lets be clear about the green HDC warning light on the dash.

If it is on and steady then HDC is switched on and will operate.

If it is on and flashing it is switched on but WILL NOT WORK. The flashing could be because you are travelling too fast, are in a gear that the system doesn't operate in or there is a fault.

Please don't rely on it if the light is flashing.

The min speed in 1st and rvse is about 3mph. In second it is about 6mph.

Yes. 1st or reverse on the Manual boxes.
D, R or CS1 on Autos.


On my 2014 manual, it works in 1,2,R & Neutral. Very Happy

A useful trick is to engage it before a slippery hill climb. If you then fail the climb and dip the clutch as you shudder to a halt the car rolls back under control from the HDC (though 3mph is quite quick in reverse! Shocked )

Best to check this somewhere safe in case it doesn't work on earlier cars.....

All it’s doing is applying the brakes and these should hopefully work in neutral! I’ve posed the question on the other thread about its effectiveness after a stall, with ignition on but no brake servo and hope someone comes back with an explanation! 2005 D3 2.7 Auto

From the workshop manual HDC needs the engine running to produce the vacuum;

BRAKE BOOSTER
The brake booster is vacuum operated and provides power assistance to the brake hydraulic system. The booster is of tandem design that incorporates 2 separate diaphragms. On both the gasoline and diesel models, the vacuum required for booster operation is produced by an engine driven, vacuum pump.
ANTI-LOCK CONTROL
The anti-lock control system features a Continental Teves Mk25E1 ABS module with integral 4 channel HCU. The ABS module and HCU provide brake system monitoring, and active brake functions to control the vehicle stability and traction. The ABS module also provides specific functions to assist the vehicle during off-road driving.
The anti-lock control system provides the following functions:
Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) Corner Brake Control (CBC) Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD) Electronic Traction Control (ETC) Emergency Brake Assist (EBA) Engine Drag-Torque Control (EDC) Hill Descent Control (HDC) with gradient release control Roll Stability Control (RSC) Terrain Response™ system integration.
