2013- steering wheel fitted to 2008 FL2 - it works!

When I joined the forum in November I was asking if it's possible to fit a past 2013 steering wheel into an older (in my case 2008) Freelander 2. The answers I received is that it's not possible, someone tried and failed.

My brother did convert his Disco 3 steering wheel to a newer RRS version with the same layout as the newer FL2 steering wheel, so I thougt it must be possible. After doing a lot of research in the Land Rover parts catalog I figured out that it should work. The steering shaft has been changed in 2013, it's now similar to the Evoque. But the screw holding the wheel on the shaft is still the same. Said that, it was worth a try.

Parts needed:
- Past 2013 steering wheel - got mine for a good price from eBay, needs back cover and all buttons, airbag taken from old steering wheel
- Blackbox Solutions steering wheel conversion kit (https://blackbox-solutions.com/shop/?code=...item=AC031)
- LR022150 Range Rover Sport steering wheel button wire
- M10x25mm Torx 50 screw

First I got my "new" steering wheel from ebay in mint condition.

These are the replacement circuit board from BBS which convert the buttons to the old FL2 signals.

The RRS cable is needed because starting from 2013 the electric connection has been changed on the FL2, but the RRS still had the same connector as the older FL2. On the picture below you see the old (white) and new (black) connector, you need the white one that will be coming with the RRS wire LR022150.

The new steering wheel from 2013 onwards has a 4mm longer shaft, so you need a 4mm+ longer screw. Original LR screw is M10x18mm, I did go for M10x25mm with a 2mm washer. Works perfect. Don't forget to put some Loctite on the screw!!

All done looks like this: Very Happy

Now some may ask why I did this? First off all after more than 110k mls the original steering wheel was quite worn and ugly, secondly I prefer the layout of the buttons from the newer steering wheel.
With the old one I was to stupid to use the cruise control without looking at the buttons, it was never logical to me to switch it on with the + symbol, most times I did press the resume button on trying to activate the cc. All buttons of course light up when you switch on your car lights.

The two 4way switches on top of the wheel have now the same functions on both sides:
up / down = Volume
left / right = previous / next
Menu or OK = Menu

The new layout can be used without looking at the buttons all the time (at least I'm now able to do so, there might be more experience people out there who could do it before .... Rolling Eyes )

Most expensive part are the BBS conversion kit, steering wheels can be found with attraktive pricing on the internet. The RRS cabel is less than €20 and the replacement screw about €0,30.
Total cost for me was around €300, but for me worth any penny.

Now have fun converting your FL2 to new steering wheel layout. Thumbs Up [/list]

Well done Thumbs Up

Going back when I had my new model steering wheel I was in dialogue with Colin [BBS] and at that time the electronics weren't suitable.
If I recall correctly, he suspected that the RRS electronics would work, but couldn't guarantee it, so it would've been a costly gamble to try them out.
I trust he's done some development on them since.

Nice job Wink FL2 now gone and have a couple of items left for sale:-

Brodit active iPhone holder + Brodit dash clip,
Bluetooth Music Streaming Module.

It was a gamble because Colin still could not guarantee that it would work. But looking at LR parts catalog and figuring out that the Disco 3 steering wheel buttons are exactly the same parts as the FL2 buttons I did go for the gamble, with success.

As mentioned in the first post the conversion kit is sold by Black Box Solutions (BBS) although I did not see it listed on their website at the moment. They also sell on Ebay but are out of stock at the moment See Ebay item no eBay Item No. 331289813499 I did think about doing this conversion myself a few months ago and contacted them to ask if their kit would allow a later model heated wheel to be fitted to an earlier model and they replied that it was not suitable so did not get any further with it. Also most people on the forum said it could not be done except for a member in Russia (I think) that managed it with a modified clockspring. I did not find this thread during the many searches I did at the time which is a pity as I think I would have had a go at doing it if I had. Might have a go depending on how you get on! Thumbs Up

We drive on the right side, nothing more to say here. Razz Laughing

@Morayjohny
A few month ago Colin from BBS still had some stock of the conversion boards, try to contact him via email or negotiate a good price with RICHARD.
