Anti Freeze

Got my FL2 in the dealer today to look at the intermittent heated windscreen and the Tech bulletin for Halogen bulbs blowing.

They've just called me off the back of the health check to say the anti-freeze reading is below requirement for the current cold snap and want £87 to change it.

any thoughts on the true cost to drain and refill anti-freeze ? especially given this cold snap isn't going to last much longer ??

Just drain the header tank and refill that with a couple of litres of anti freeze if you're bothered - that'll bring it up to strength. Make sure its the same type though - should be red stuff (OAT) in there. Personally, if you've got to almost mid-Feb without it freezing, I would be tempted to leave it until later in the year. Could do it yourself quite easily for about £20. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto
Evoque SD4 Dynamic Lux Auto
Present: Audi A3 S Line.

cheers Steve, thought as much and to top up with pure anti freeze was my main plan anyway, just thought £87 to drain and refill was a bit over the top (even allowing for disposal of the old stuff) and like you say its lasted so far this winter with no problems and temp has been down to -6 a couple of nights.

Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

cheers Don, hadn't looked around for some just yet as to be honest im not that worried about it. ive saved those links though for future reference Thumbs Up
Its in for MOT next month at my indy so ill get them to check it as well and then top it up myself if they say it is down.
It could just be LR trying to get some money out of me as the work its in for is hopefully covered by warranty anyway which they will get paid less for.

just picked it up

they have listed the coolant as -15C

and also 1% water content in the brake fluid, does this signify a leak somewhere letting water in or could it be down to the cold weather inducing some condensation into the system in some way ??

Brake fluid attract moisture, change it every 3 years.

Last time I was at -15 was November gone but I had to go to Nepal and trek to 5,000 mts. Not quite going to hit that in the midlands me thinks this year. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

Brake fluid is hygroscopic by nature and will absorb moisture from the air over time. Although the brake fluid reservoir has a cap it is not completely sealed and vents to the atmosphere(to allow the fluid level to drop as the pads wear).

Ill have to check the service book to see when the brake fluid was last changed. Guessing I shouldn't be too concerned with 1% and as the front pads are at 50% I may change the brake fluid when they are done later in the year.

cheers all Thumbs Up

RogB as regards the lights I just this morning asked the girl on the service desk at LR dealers and she told me that the HB3 are Censored , there is no upgrade and she uses Osram NightBreakers Laughing If it wasn't so bad it'd be funny.

mine is booked back in for the 28th to have the headlight wiring mod done under tech bulletin LTB00841v2 released March 2016. I believe they install a new bit of loom to increase resistance slightly to try and stop bulbs blowing.

once this is done then I will most probably look at better bulbs but as mine is a 2013MY with the single bulb for dipped/main I didn't think the Osram ones would work too well. Did she have a slightly older MY with the separate bulbs ?

the lady on the service desk at the dealers just said that Halfords were just poor quality which is why they blew, so I just told her I had tried Halfords, Bosch, GE, Philips and they all blew regardless. The only ones that haven't so far blown (jinxed !) are the current ones bought from LR but they really aren't very good in the dark at all which is kind of misses the point of headlights Whistle

Exactly my line of thinking, but at least they reckon it will stop bulbs blowing Whistle

We should not be restricted by LR to just buying bulbs from them ''because all motor factors sell cheap rubbish ones''
We should be able to buy a suitable bulb from anywhere we wish to, taking on board that the brighter they are then the shorter their life span. But a blown filament is nothing compared to exploding bulbs (happened to me more than once on Evoque and FL2) and melted glass (again happened to me more than once).
There is clearly something very wrong with LR design for single bulb HB3 headlamps but of course they will never admit it.
