Cambelt covered in oil

Hi everyone,

Decided to have the cambelt replaced a year early on my Freelander 2 TD4 auto, before towing my caravan with it 725 miles to Scotland.

Probably a good shout, as the Land Rover specialist garage just called to say after removing the covers the belt is covered in oil, and could be the crankshaft oil seal.

Does that sound probable on an 82,000 mile 2009 car?

Thanks and regards
Simon

Yes but it could also be oil dripping from the air filter pipe at the top of the engine as it collects inside there. The garage need to just check that for you but belt will need changing for your engine safety now. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

Thanks very much. Not sure why I'm often sceptical about things like this Confused

Its because to be frank many in the trade are hard to trust and those that you do are far too busy to see you at short notice when you are stuck.

I had my moments as young man in the trade years ago and being on a bonus scheme was never in the customers favour. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

Freeleander is fixed and back home!

Turned out both front oil crankshaft and front camshaft seals were leaking and required replacement.

Local LR specialist changed the cambelt, water pump, both seals, anti freeze, and free use of a loan car and the total bill came to £502.55.

I think that is very reasonable.

Well, that answers the question I asked on another thread about whether £594 quoted by my local Land Rover specialist was a good price for a cam belt & water pump change then... Shocked

Great!

I had been quoted £800 by one LR specialist, £500 by a main dealer - without the water pump, and £375 by the local specialist who carried out the work. The additional amount was for changing both oil seals that were leaking, which brought it to £502. https://www.crallenandsons.co.uk/

Thanks, that's very useful information there - looks like my Indy is charging LR stealer prices then!! Pity that your Indy is a bit too far away from me to be a practical option.
