Terrain response: reverting to Mud ‘n Ruts

Hi All,

I’ve recently bought a Freelander 2 which has been running well. However last couple of days the terrain response has been acting rather odd. When I first start the car in the morning all is well and no special programmes are selected. I then drop the kids at school, start the car and mud and ruts are selected when I start it. I turn the dial to ‘normal’ mode and all is well. We had a lot of snow last week and I was using a few different programmes however always returned to ‘normal’ mode before turning off the engine.

Any advice would be great.

2007 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Manual Stornoway Grey

Hi, this started happening on mine shortly after I bought it.So 3 years ago now.

We had some snow and I also tried a few settings and then the next day when i started car it was in GGS. I thought I had left it there and just turned it back to normal. Next morning back in snow mode.

Turned out to be the control module in front of the gear lever that was faulty. Replaced under extended warranty luckily.

The only thing I could think of that may have caused it to fail was that I had a problem starting a day or so before. Loose earth between body and gearbox. Now replaced and second earth lead fitted as well.

It's been fine since and I've used various settings in the snow since.

167000 miles, 07 plate, manual, no idea aboutvthe battery, will need to check the battery itself. Transfer box was replaced 3years ago.

Mine too. GGS mode repeatedly despite select Normal mode.
My mpg is awful now - I suspect it's stuck in GGS - how would I prove or disprove this?

I'm wondering if it could be related to getting 'new' tyres fitted, seems to have started after having tyres swapped. Could the tyre fitters have bumped something when taking the wheels off?

Would one of those OBD things provide any related information? Which ones do forum readers recommend - there is a myriad of cheap ones online?

If it's in GGS mode the acceleration will be affected (much gentler). I think it should switch the HDC on as well. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone

Yes, I think the acceleration is lower, which is why I suspect the mode. I'm wondering what diagnostic I could use as proof.

Well the car sailed through its MOT earlier in the week, not one advisory! Also had the car serviced, oils and filters all done. The problem with the car defaulting to mud and ruts has gone! No idea how! But not complaining!

Hi, would they have disconnected battery during service? If they did it might have reset something.

That was my first thought and I asked the garage the question. However no, they didn't touch the battery.
