Interesting, having just replaced a bulb yesterday I had a look at the wiring to the bulb connector and given that it's carrying 5 amps (60W) I was surprised as to how thin it was. In previous cars the headlamp wiring has definitely been thicker. I wonder if the "resistance wire" is just thinner wire to give a bit of voltage drop? 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

So are we saying that if I went back to stealers with bulbs blowing they would be obliged to do a fix under warranty? but does said fix work? Rolling Eyes If it wasn't so bad it'd be funny.

I am going to get it down the dealers and get them to do the resistance wire fix FOC. This is the 4th time I will have been in re the issue!

I have just had a look and they have been fitting LR044458 which are H11 bulbs, but most on here are mentioning HB3?

unido2 can you let us know how it goes please also HB3 bulbs are in 2013 onwards but there may be a reason the stealers are not letting on why they are fitting different. If it wasn't so bad it'd be funny.

ive had a search but cant find it among all the HB3 threads and mine is in next week to have the heated windscreen looked at so im going to ask them to install the resistance wire.

TIA

Rog

RogB , just found this if its any help. sorry its long but couldn't copy & paste bit of it Rolling Eyes

Guys.... Land Rover released a Technical Bulletin about blowing bulbs. Common I believe and only when I was on my third set did I find out about the upgrade. Technical Bulletin basically says that if bulbs are replaced from dealership and don’t last a year then the vehicle should be given additional resistive cables fitted between bulb and wire. The Bulletin only applies to bulbs fitted by dealer and oem bulbs. I just as recently with the Aberdeen dealership had heated discussion as I followed their advice and paid for two oem bulbs to be fitted at my cost. And within the year returned the vehicle back with the blown bulb. After heated discussion in the showroom I purchased both resistive cables myself at cost of £64 and fitted them that day. After talking to the Aftermarket Director yesterday my grievance is that I believed I followed the instructions by Land Rover and Dealership only to be charged for the upgrade to stop my bulbs from blowing. I’ve worked in manufacturing and as far as I’m concerned this is a Land Rover manufacturing defect that I’ve had to pay to fix. Doesn’t warrant a recall but certainly a free upgrade, certainly not a cost to the customer. Only certain models affected.

Technical Bulletin is LTB00841V2 and released in March 2016 which superseded a previous version.

Call you’re dealer and see what they say. The Aberdeen dealer and Land Rover for me are pretty clueless, well the two guys I was dealing with. They thought I was concerned about bulb costs when I was concerned I was paying to fix a manufacturing defect that Land Rover clearly knew about.

Chris If it wasn't so bad it'd be funny.

Cheers Jules.
My current set were purchased from Land Rover around November and haven't blown yet, but they are extremely dim.
Both headlight units are full of very visible glass fragments which can be seen with the units in place from previous bulbs which can be seen with the units in place which obviously isn't good.

I'm just on my 3rd set after 45000 miles. Fitted genuine lr (which are (Philips) . Indy asked me whether I had had the 'fix' or something done when I went to buy the bulbs, as he guessed they were for fl2. I said they last about 20000 miles, so he suggested mine wasn't a problem one.

Not a problem one !!! Thats still awful bulb longevity IMO

I upgraded quite early to Night breakers because the OEM were so dim compared to my other non-HID cars and then I discovered the heat build up problem - the Night breakers last about 10-15K miles

Maybe, but 23000 miles per bulb is now what I expect😕

There is something a bit more fundamental here. It's a well known fact that the life of an incandescent bulb is extremely dependent on the supply voltage as a rule of thumb 5% over-voltage will roughly halve the lamp life, whereas 5% under-voltage will approximately double it. (There is a corresponding inverse effect with light output). Now 5% of 12v is only 0.6v so we are talking quite small variations and it seems to me that the voltage regulation is set too high in some cars hence the need to add some resistance wire. (Of course when running the voltage goes up to over 14v which doesn't help)
We have had 5 Freelanders in the family and I can't recall the first four using more than one bulb in total. My 14 reg one has now used two bulbs in a year but I believe that there were quite a few changes made from MY13 onwards as the car has a lot of Evogue stuff in it. So I wonder if Evoque users are experiencing similar failures? 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Yes, my 62 plate Evoque which also used HB3 had exactly the same problems.... only had the car 6 months and went through about 4 sets of bulbs (and it was in the LR dealer for about 2 months of that 6!! )

Anyone know the dealer price for lamp replacement?

Just wondered if it might be easier to get my replacement lamp carried out by LR dealer as I don't have the time to mess about with what looks like a fiddly job.

Has anyone had this done by LR dealer and what the cost is?

I am sure they will be happy to charge you a minimum hour, or what ever their minimum is, for what is literally the work of a moment.

Granted you need a 10mm spanner but, once you get the nack it is really easy. After all, if you look up "Tools for breaking bulbs" lead lights are number one and Freelanders are number two.

A 10mm spanner and five minutes is all it takes to change a headlight bulb - not even a tiny bit fiddly Whistle Cheers,
