Audio system for FL2 - available types & wiring diagrams

Hey all,

I am pretty fed up with needing to play my music through the AUX cable. Main issues are around people that hit the jack while still in the AUX IN socket and break it.

YES, that is a big problem for me. I am at my 4th AUX IN socket.

So, the idea is to:
- be able to play music directly through my phone (A2DP)
- be able to play music online through the head unit
- (optional) navigation available on the head unit
- keep the cubby where the Land Rover navi should go as storage space

Basically, this means an Android head unit.

So, a few questions:

- anybody got a list of the types of audio systems that were installed on 2008 Freelanders? Anything special about the 60 years aniversary FL2s?
- anybody got a wiring diagram for the audio systems? (i have the circuit document, but I was looking for a map of the audio system and speaker / amp / subwoofer placement)

Currently I am working on the list of stuff I need to have around before actually replacing the head unit. Therefore my request for wiring diagram and info on available sound systems Smile

As far as potential candidates, I am thinking about these 2:
- Joying head unit - https://tinyurl.com/yael3ovw
- Xtrons ta695p - https://tinyurl.com/y8q7at9e
- Xtrons TE103P (if it fits) - https://tinyurl.com/ycd55w4x

Thanks a lot for any help you can provide.

Hah!

I was just looking at Audio Connectivity Module VPLFE002 and how to connect it in Topix - too bad it does say in that PDF what it is about Smile

Quick question though: the audio connectivity module is only for wired connection or does it add bluetooth music streaming capabilities as well?

If you just remove the radio you will lose the controls on the steering wheel and the parking sensors. Here is some info of a kit http://www.freel2.com/forum/topic29013.html that retains these. Maybe the same kit can be used for the head units you found. It also contains a amplifier bypass cable to connect the speakers again (except the subwoofer I think).

The Umno Tech bit looks to be what I may need.

I am pretty happy (read as bloody amazed) at how good the existing audio system sounds. Main gripe is that I don't have Bluetooth music streaming.

Since I am not using the CDs, I could dispense with it and use that Umno tech thingy to stream music from my phone (A2DP). Now to just make sure it is not just some dumb interfacing like Bluetooth receiver to line in because, otherwise, I will not be able to use the steering wheel commands.

This has been covered a fair few times (not being cheeky) on the forum and each time I hope to see a slightly less over the top solution that doesn't involve a new head unit and about 10 harnesses and adapters to *fingers crossed* keep the steering wheel controls and the reverse parking sensors working.

I bought one of these. https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B015E954HA/ref...pAbDZ02RH4

Basically I then took out the little cubby in the centre console in the passenger footwell, removed the aux in connector completely from the centre console and then fed Bluetooth line out cable through the hole and into the aux in. Not the prettiest option, bit saves the kids kicking it every 10 minutes. Has lasted over a year like this.

I then mounted the controller just next to the handbrake recess. Basically it gives me complete control of my phone music and without looking I can skip tracks or pause the music. Fair enough I have to take one hand off the wheel but I can do it by feel just like changing gear.

It is far far cheaper and if you run the cables neatly looks fine. FL2 TD4 GS 60 reg Facelift - so many issues

Now greatly regret selling the Outlander. MPG of the FL2 is atrocious and so are the fuel bills. Fun though 😎
Couldn’t afford the fuel bills so back to an older Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. Significantly better than I remembered it to be…

Thank you for the suggestion.

I am aware of Bluetooth receivers that go into the AUX socket and usually there quite a bit of a quality drop in music quality. Also, (yes, I know, first world problems), I was looking to use the steering wheel commands to control the music.

I don't think I have ever used the parking sensors yet (got 1 front one shorted out, never got to fixing it, but the car is already shorter than what I was used to)

Truth be told, I think I have read most posts on the head unit swapping at least 2 times. With a few exceptions, most never proceed to change it so there aren't really well documented threads on switching to an Android head unit and, really important and overlooked, on the prerequisites.

However, I am glad I asked because I got the best suggestion to solving precisely my problem. Outside of music streaming from smart phones, I don't see any real use to switching the original head unit if you already have the Alpine system or above (at least in my opinion) since sound is already in high quality.

Fair dos. I have to say I haven't noticed a great deal of audio quality loss. By the time you factor in road noise and children.

But yes I think replacing the head unit is overkill for just being able to play music wirelessly.

Had a look at the unit mentioned and it isn't (to me) 100% clear whether or not the steering wheel controls will work when the connection is via Bluetooth. I'd consider buying one too if I knew it worked. FL2 TD4 GS 60 reg Facelift - so many issues

It should work. I was speaking with Alex Pescaru in PMs and he said something about emulating the CD box.

I will drop the guys an email and see whether they confirm it.

Also check your phone's capabilities. My phone will only connect with 1 Bluetooth device at the same time. If I connect to a Bluetooth receiver for music it will disconnect the hands-free phone connection. So its streaming music or hands-free phone calls but not both at the same time. It's a known limitation of my phone, probably more phones have the same limitation.

Good point. I'll see if the manufacturer has an answer for this Smile

Also, I'll re-read their manual and see if I'll end up with 2 bluetooth devices or not.

Not sure if I remember correctly, but I think you can decide if you want to keep using the car's handsfree system or use Trioma device for both.

What they say on their website:

"
Note:
If original Bluetooth hands-free kit is already installed in the vehicle, it can still be used. In this
Case, your smartphone can be connected in parallel with two Bluetooth devices.
Calls are then made as usual via original hands-free system and music streaming is done via Trioma BMT-2.
Manual switching during a call is not required.
"

What they are saying on the web site is correct, it is not a device limitation. It is my phone (and maybe others) that doesn't want to connect in parallel. As soon as I try to connect a second device it will disconnect the first.

Will the JLR Audio Connectivity Module work on a FR2 HSE 08 alpin system and allow audio streaming as well as use of steering wheel controls for the telephone?

If so, are there instructions anywhere for the installation and the parts required?

(I don't want to go down the route of using the aux jack if I can help it and the Umno website is currently down so can't see what that is)

Just looked at this and have the same question, was it answered anywhere?

No it doesn’t give you Bluetooth streaming in itself but because you have a digital usb input it will give you a digital input if you use a Bluetooth usb stick unlike the aux input which is analog. MY15
