Rear Wheel/Hub Bearing

Changed R/H rear yesterday & it was much easier than I expected it to be.

You will need access to a decent workshop press & the necessary tubes, blocks etc for pressing with.

The worst part of the whole exercise was releasing the recessed clip that holds the park brake cable into the hub!

I was lucky enough to also have access to a lathe, so made up a tube that fitted over the cable & compressed the 3 retaining lugs at the same time, the cable then slipped out easily.

For anyone that's interested, the tube has to have an ID of 12mm & an OD of 15.5mm & was 50mm long.

L/H rear wheel bearing has now started to hum, much worse with weight in the boot.

Just as well I have one in stock!

Next Saturday will be the day to get it done. (Now Sold). 2008 Freelander 2 (Nazca Sand) SE TD4 Auto. Statutory write off & on WOVR for hail damage but still road legal.

P38 v8 auto no problems,great howle from exhausts when giving it welly
Td5 auto head gasket,no5 pot not uncommon but good car.
1st Tdv6s manual epb problem fixed under warranty(stealer said"never heard of this before,i suggested he looked at d3 forum.
2nd Tdv6 se auto epb
3rd Tdv6 xs auto 2008,swmbo,s favourite.

I'm an Olde Engineer who can make anything, 45yrs experience.

People are more willing to 'Repair' their vehicle then conduct 'Preventive Maintenance'

The only myth is ......... people think they are saving money ....... NO ... just doing the job twice !

I'm sure you know more than most if you been inginearlimgs for a Lifetime.

I had the conversation just recently with my current garage as I've been fixing my Landrovers for some time now Neutral . He looked at it slightly more simply..

Essentially, things that work in pairs are better changed as pairs, things that don't, it don't-make-no-never-mind. On an older car then Discs yep, pads yep, springs yep, shocks yep, anything that 'balances' the car.

However, if you have a newer car which may have been in a prang you are never likely to change both front shocks if only the right side has been damaged.

I'm inclined to agree with most of what Badbuy AND Largered have said when you consider mechanical components.

For electronic components it is different, they can have a poor shelf/handling life and will fail quickly after fitting or last a very long time with little or no deterioration, and each subunit has normally little effect on the subunits around it.

Mechanical components wear slowly through their life and benefit from the occasional bit of love (or maintenance as we engineers call it)

If one item in a pair, chain or set is changed during its lifetime, then you must consider the stress on the rest, or whether as in the suspension the response will be balanced. (for example I would always change all 4 shock absorbers)

As I was involved with costings of long term or even lifetime maintenance, I must admit to tending to go on the cautious side, so we had a bit of profit.

For a business you have to weigh up the differences of cost of maintenance against early replacement. I believe that this led to the invention of sealed 'lifetime' components. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)
FL2 Metropolis SD4 Auto 2014 2017- (16k - 77k+ miles) (MY2015)
Metro in its 11th Year of (Extended) LR Warranty / Full LR Service History
(Expensive, but Trouble/Worry free - hopefully?)

Indeed you may have, but that may require copious amounts of alcohol down an 'ye olde english pub' to determine... Very Happy

All I can be sure of is I wasted a great deal of mine which I am currently making up on.
