You probably all know this, but even I got caught out and screwed over.

Wanted some genuine LR Front Mudflaps - silly money, probably not worth it, but really don't want to roll the dice with copies and find myself re-fitting in 6 months.

So I bought some from a major LR parts retailer at maybe £10 less than MRSP for Genuine LR parts. Twice the price I can get copies for.

And they are bloody copies. Damn sharks. Distance selling and all that, they are going back, but really this should not be permitted. If it has a LR part number it should be an LR part. You can't trust anyone these days. I just might get trading standards on them.

(I know the Genuine are over-priced, and many copies are as good, but that's my look out - no one has yet told me genuine are rubbish and I want to be sure of fitting them only once)

But it is an issue with LR parts across the board for some reason - You get terms like "Genuine Style" "Genuine Quality" on many websites (or OEM in place of Genuine, and other sneaky phrasing). But on the one I bought there was nothing to suggest it was not genuine JLR. You should not have to assume fake if it does not say genuine, especially when expensive from a (supposedly) reputable company. (If it was eBay I normally assume fake anyway if it's cheap)

I am often happy to buy pattern parts, but clearly I want to do so knowingly at an appropriate price.

It was no mistake - they simply sell pattern parts with LR numbers and don't advise you they are not genuine.

(Some parts are genuine, but who the hell are you supposed to know?)

So, Craddocks still not responded to my complaint, so I now have the OEM's from our good friends at Duckworths (Same price as Craddock, but genuine)

So I can compare and contrast for all you folks. It's down to construction material - shape wise they look identical.

Copy has plastic washers (for load spreading). JLR has metal washers. Quality of steel over time not possible to know.

The obvious big difference is the material - copies are hard plastic - completely rigid. JLR are hard rubber or rubberised plastic - whatever it is, there is plenty of give in it.

For my money, the softer genuine ones are less likely to rip off if you catch them on something - they will give and not transfer load to the screws/bodywork. The hard ones won't give at all - possibly ripping off or worse, damaging the bodywork. JLR ones more likely to sacrifice themselves over the bodywork (in my opinion). So I am happy paying the premium for that reason.
