Diesels and the Budget

Since FL2s are no higher than Euro5 I guess we all get hit with this unless it only affects new cars. Fuel duty stays same though

Diesel drivers face higher taxes under a scheme designed to penalise the fuel, the chancellor announced.

From April, the first year’s vehicle excise duty for diesel cars that fail to meet the latest standards will move up by one tax band, Philip Hammond announced.

Although more details will be set out later in the day, when the Treasury publishes its Red Book with policy details, this would appear to exclude euro6 diesel engines, the latest technology that the industry claims is clean.

The government will also “clarify the law” so that motorists who charge their electric vehicles at work do not face “benefit in kind” charges.

It has set aside £200m – which will be match funded by industry – to promote the roll out of electric charging points, as well as another £100m towards discounts on battery cars for consumers.

edit: just read this on the Guardian Website ( ps im not a Guardianista , I'm retired and its free Rolling with laughter )

RM: Hammond promises that he is not hammering white van man or woman – mindful of how his budget will be received by headline writers at the Sun. The increase in vehicle tax also only applies to new diesel cars from April 1, so existing owners who were encouraged to buy diesel by previous governments will avoid being penalised 2009 GS Auto Zermatt Silver - Sold June 21 after 10 years of ownership

I guess that pre 2011 (ie those without a DPF) will be Euro 4 and post 2011 Euro 5 . 2011 was when the "organ pipes" disappeared from the air intake pipe. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Yes you are correct, but I've edited my post after reading a bit more. I know Lyn's car is Euro 4 but what gets me is that she does about 4000 miles a year. When I was working we had " reps" in "green" cars driving 60,000 miles a year on minimal tax surely that is more of an issue ? certainly would be when I consider that 70% of the Fleet was VAG.. Headline on BBC says which don't meet latest standards - so anything worse than Euro 6 I guess.

But the mirror says new cars... I thought new cars had to meet the latest standards.

It will all become clear, I guess.

“From April 2018, the first-year VED rate for diesel cars that don’t meet the latest standards will go up by one band,” Hammond said on Wednesday in his annual budget statement.

Even if it does affect us, that's an extra £40 a year - half a tank of fuel.

Wow, really worth the used values of Diesels dropping by 10-15% (Sarcastic)

FL2 seem to be immune to these falls, but a great time to buy a used diesel generally I reckon.

Government Speak

Sir Humphrey: Notwithstanding the fact that your proposal could conceivably encompass certain concomitant benefits of a marginal and peripheral relevance, there is a countervailing consideration of infinitely superior magnitude involving your personal complicity and corroborative malfeasance, with a consequence that the taint and stigma of your former associations and diversions could irredeemably and irretrievably invalidate your position and culminate in public revelations and recriminations of a profoundly embarrassing and ultimately indefensible character. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

So it seems only new cars not meeting what I assume must be Euro 7, and then only first year registration.

Window dressing. Or Government Speak as Yorky puts it.

So now we have 1) RFL 2) First Year Premium up on Diesels 3) greater than £40K premium for year 2- 6 inclusive. On the right ( or wrong) sort of vehicle you could pay £3000 to use the thing over that six year period before it even turns a wheel ! 2009 GS Auto Zermatt Silver - Sold June 21 after 10 years of ownership

Yes, and all clever taxation:-

Lots of money gained.
Not enough people affected for a riot or sympathy.
Most of the people affected wealthy enough to be scared to death of voting for Corbyn, so no lost votes.

WIN WIN WIN (for the chancellor)

I believe all new diesel cars will jump up a band from next April.

The “Latest Standards”mentioned are not Euro 6 or 7, but the new “Real Driving Emissions” standards which test emissions under real world conditions. Stage one of these regs is already in force with stage 2 getting closer.

The £jump in the upper bands is quite large. I wonder how this will affect the market for SUVs in general? Diesel makes a lot of sense for large vehicles and petrol SUVs are typically very thirsty?
